The Town of Nashville will pick up bagged leaves only on Tuesdays, Oct. 30 and Nov. 13.

Nashville residents can bag and leave them by the curb. Bags with trash, sticks or other objects included will not be accepted.

Brown County Public Library is offering the following free activities:

  • 5 to 6 p.m. — Nov. 7 and Dec. 5, Cover-to-Cover Kids Book Club. Children can discuss favorite books, get ideas and read new things. No registration needed.
  • 3 to 4:30 p.m. — Nov. 28, teen craft program and snacks.

Thursdays

  • 10 to 11 a.m. — Weekly through Dec. 6, Creative Builders for 12 and younger, with Lego, Duplos, Keva Blocks, Magna Tiles, more.
  • 2 to 2:45 p.m. — Weekly through Dec. 6, Ready Readers for ages 6 to 12, with practice reading, exploring, sharing.
  • 3 to 5 p.m. — Weekly, homework and tutoring for teens on the lower level of the library. Volunteers from the literacy coalition and library staff will be available.
  • 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. — Nov. 29, teens can discuss favorite books, get ideas and read new things. No registration needed.

Get free technology help at library

Volunteer Ryan Ridge will offer a free tutorial at the Brown County Public Library for those who struggle with computers, smartphones or tablets. From 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, Ridge will be available in a lower-level meeting room of the library, 205 Locust Lane.

Volunteers needed for community Thanksgiving

Volunteers are needed to help with and carry on a free community Thanksgiving dinner that has been hosted by the Brown County EMT Association for years. In August, it was announced that the association was dissolving.

The plan is to use the organization’s remaining funds to keep hosting the community Thanksgiving dinner for at least five years, but volunteers are needed to help host the dinner, and the association is looking for another group to take over the dinner.

The dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 22 in the Brown County High School cafeteria.

Call TRIAD at 812-988-5606 prior to Tuesday, Nov. 20 for deliveries to the homebound.

Financial donations for the dinner will be accepted at the Peoples State Bank, 41 S. Hawthorne Drive (behind MacDonald’s) before and after the dinner. Make checks payable to “Community Thanksgiving Dinner.”

Brown County Public Library to be closed

The Brown County Public Library will be closed all day Friday, Nov. 2 for “staff day.”

Christmas bazaar, quilt raffle planned in November

St. Agnes Catholic Church will host its 2018 Christmas Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2 and 3.

The event will take place in the church basement, 1008 McLary Road.

Items for sale will include Christmas decorations, crafts, books, jewelry and accessories, aprons, kids’ items, collectibles and paper craft products. There will also be a silent auction of gift baskets and tabletop Christmas trees.

Cookies will be available for purchase by the pound along with other baked treats. Coffee and hot tea will be available from Sweetea’s Tea Shop.

A Brown County Stars queen-size quilt will be raffled, with the drawing at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Volunteers can meet Saturday for community clean-up

The public is welcome to show up at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3 on the south side of McDonald’s at 46 East and Hawthorne to join a fall community clean-up.

Keep Brown County Beautiful, in partnership with McDonald’s, will provide free coffee, trash bags, grabbers and vests for volunteers. The group will organize and leave by 9:15 a.m. and work until noon.

Volunteers are welcome to clean up their own road or accept an Adopt-a-Road assignment. Meeting at McDonald’s is not mandatory; trash from road clean-up will be accepted at the truck at McDonald’s until 1 p.m. or can be called in ahead of time for pickup at 812-988-0140.

Rummage sale planned at Nazarene church

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, Parkview Church of the Nazarene, 1750 State Road 46 East, will host more than 10 families at indoor booths selling new and used clothing, gear, household goods, decor, furniture, tools, “man stuff” and more.

The church is across from the north entrance to Brown County State Park.

Booths are $20 each with a table (8 by 12 feet) and chairs. All fees benefit Parkview church ministries. Those interested in a booth can email [email protected].

Craft and bake sale slated at church

HELMSBURG — From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, Brown County Community Church, 2370 Main St. will host its annual craft and bake sale.

Party planned for Republicans election night

An election night return party for Brown County Republicans will be celebrated Tuesday, Nov. 6 at the Season’s Conference Center, State Road 46 East. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

A pasta bar buffet with salad, dessert, iced tea and lemonade will be served for a $5 cover charge and a cash bar will be available.

Brown County Republican poll workers with credentials will be admitted free.

Chili dinner planned Nov. 8

Brown County Head Start will serve a chili dinner from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8 at the Head Start Center, 161 E. Gould St.

Chamber plans art, wine and cheese event

The public is welcome for an after-hours art, wine and cheese event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8 at the Brown County Art Gallery, 1 Artist Drive.

Hosted by Brown County Chamber of Commerce Connections, the evening will include networking opportunities, a guided tour and update on the art gallery, with wine and food provided by the Brown County Winery and the Brown County Spice Company.

Veterans Day program open to community

Brown County Schools will host its annual community Veterans Day program on Friday, Nov. 9 starting at 9:30 a.m. at the high school’s Larry C. Banks Memorial Gymnasium. Keith Baker will be the guest speaker.

Veterans are welcome at a social hour at 8:30 a.m. and at a luncheon after the program. Doors open to the public at 9 a.m.

All veterans are welcome to attend and be recognized, in addition to the widows of fallen veterans. A special commemoration will mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Banks’ ultimate sacrifice will be remembered. A military salute will be performed by the Brown County High School band and high school and junior high choirs. History Club members will make presentations and winners will be announced of the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen essay contests.

RSVP by Nov. 9 for extension dinner meeting

The Purdue Extension annual soup dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15 in the exhibit building at the 4-H fairgrounds on Memorial Drive.

Fried chicken, pulled pork and beverages will be provided. Guests can bring a side dish or dessert to share as desired.

The program will include guest speaker Leslie Bishop discussing a pollinator meadow project for Brown County State Park, updates from the extension educator, and information about how the extension impacts the Brown County community.

Bazaar, bean dinner, bake sale planned Nov. 10

HAMBLEN TWP. — A holiday bazaar, quilt raffle and bean dinner will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10 at Goshen Community Church, 2798 Gatesville Road, 3 miles east of Bean Blossom.

The bazaar will feature crocheted hats, bead work, afghans, cloth books for babies, potholders and other kitchen items, jams and jellies for sale.

Bake sale items will include cookies, pies, bread and persimmon pudding.

For dinner, a bowl of bean soup, cornbread muffin, cole slaw, choice of dessert and drink will be served for a $5 donation.

Raffle tickets for a queen-size quilt, “Glory Bound,” in autumn colors, can be purchased for $1 each or six tickets for $5 during the bazaar. The winner will be drawn at 3 p.m. and need not be present to win. For tickets prior to the bazaar, call Ruth Fox at 812-988-7892.

Raptor Rendezvous slated for Nov. 11

The 2018 Indiana Raptor Center Rendezvous will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11 at Abe Martin Lodge in Brown County State Park.

The event will include free entrance to the state park, a Mexican food buffet, cash bar, live raptors, a silent auction and photos.

Tickets cost $35 each, or $25 each for wildlife rehabilitators and their volunteers.

Blood donations can be made Nov. 14 at church

A blood donation opportunity is planned from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14 at Parkview Church of the Nazarene, 1750 State Road 46 East.

Blood and platelets can only be given by donors who are feeling well.

Donors of all blood types, especially type O, are needed this fall after hurricanes Michael and Florence forced cancellation of about 200 blood drives.

A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of I.D. are required at check-in. High school students and other donors 18 and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Thanksgiving meal will follow service Nov. 18

HAMBLEN TWP. — A Thanksgiving service at 10 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 18 will be followed by a thanksgiving meal at Sprunica Baptist Church, 3902 Sprunica Road. After the meal, the food pantry will be open.

 

Holiday art, craft show planned at conference center

The Seasons Holiday Art and Craft Show, a 40-year tradition, will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24. The event will be at the Seasons Lodge Conference Center, 560 State Road 46 East. Admission is free.

The juried show features fine art and a variety of unique crafts. Works this year will include hand-carved exotic animals, local and regional paintings, photography, basketmaking, yard art, woodworking, handmade jewelry, soaps and quilts, scherenschnitte (paper cutting), rag rugs, knitting, mosaic and stained gourds, leather work, wooden signs, crocheting, felt art, and fresh pine wreaths and swags provided by the Brown County 4-H Club.

Breakfast made by the Seasons’ staff will be sold in the conference center beginning at 10 a.m. Staff will add homemade chili, vegetable soup, assorted sandwiches and desserts for lunch. Warmed apple cider and fried biscuits with apple butter will also be available.

Community Christmas tree lighting date set

The Brown County Community Tree Lighting will take place Friday, Nov. 23 at the Brown County History Center on East Gould Street. Refreshments and live holiday tunes played by Brown County Christmas Music Sing-Along artists will start at 5:30 and the tree lighting at 6 p.m. Admission is free.

Christmas drive-through light show set

BEAN BLOSSOM — Bill Monroe Music Park and Campground will host Christmas at the Bean, an interactive, drive-through light show with live music and live nativity scene. The event will run from dusk to 11 p.m. Wednesday to Friday, Nov. 28 to 30, and Friday, Dec. 14 to Thursday, Jan. 3.

Santa Train will roll into Brown County Nov. 30

HELMSBURG — For the 29th year, the Indiana Rail Road Co. will bring Santa, Mrs. Claus and a train full of storybook characters to Morgantown and Helmsburg to visit with local children on Friday, Nov. 30.

The Santa Train is due to arrive at the tracks by the Morgantown Fire Station at 6:30 p.m. It will leave at 8 p.m.

The train is scheduled to pull into the Jackson Township fire department, 4831 Helmsburg Road, at 8:30 p.m. It will depart at 10 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

‘Believe’ live holiday show coming to Playhouse

A holiday variety show for all ages with Christmas songs, dancing, comedy, special lighting and holiday characters will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Performances will begin Friday, Nov. 30 and run weekends through Sunday, Dec. 23 at the Brown County Playhouse, 70 S. Van Buren St.

Tickets cost $21.50 per adult and $20.50 per senior/student/military. Children 10 and younger are free with a paid adult.

The Golden Ticket Production is presented by I Love Brown County and the Brown County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Tickets available for self-guided cabin tour

Four log homes and a Presbyterian log church will be open to ticket holders for self-guided tours between 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1.

The tour will include a 1937 home built using logs from the 1800s, a new partial-log home, a completely renovated log home, a log home once owned by Brown County artist Marie Goth, and a 19th century log church. Homeowners will be at each location to provide history on the homes and the church.

Tickets will be available at the History Center and the Brown County Visitors Center for $10 each prior to the event. Tickets at the History Center, visitors center and log church the day of the event will cost $12. Proceeds will go to the Brown County Historical Society for programming.

Christmas celebration, holidays slated at state historic site

BELMONT — Steele’s County Christmas will take place from 1 to 4 p.m.  Sunday, Dec. 2 at the T.C. Steele State Historic Site.

The celebration of St. Nicholas Day will include holiday music, crafts and activities, hot cider and cookies, as well as a visit with St. Nicholas and Belsnickel. All the activities are included with the purchase of site admission.

The historic site will be open for the holidays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, Dec. 2 to Jan. 6.

Local game convention planned in spring

BroCoCon, Brown County’s first game convention, is planned from Friday to Sunday, March 29 to 31 at the Brown County Inn, 51 State Road 46 East.

The event, hosted by The Toy Chest is intended to be family- and adult-friendly; adults are welcome with or without children.

The convention will include booths set up by category and vendor to learn, play and/or buy games, with popular strategy, family, party and toddler games available.

Game instruction will be provided, with time to learn and play new games, get instruction on strategy games, participate in a scavenger hunt around town and enjoy a 21-and-older after-party, as well as other activities.

BroCoCon tickets cost $10 per adult and $5 per child, with 2 and younger admitted free. The adult after-party, $10, includes a drink ticket. Fees of about $1.50 per ticket will be added.
