PHOTO ESSAY: Getting in shape for track season

Before parents, grandparents and siblings gather in the stands to start cheering on their favorite Eagles, Brown County’s junior high/intermediate track team has some work to do.

Thirty-two fifth- and sixth-graders came out for track this year; 20 of them are brand new to the sport, said Head Coach Chasity Smith.

New recruits and veteran runners started spring training the week before spring break. Some of them have kept in shape doing other sports since track season ended last summer; others were feeling a little winter weary during the first few days of conditioning.

While the fifth- and sixth-graders share track space with the more experienced seventh- and eighth-grade runners, they’ll mainly practice among themselves. However, excelling intermediate school athletes will have the opportunity to move up alongside the the upperclassmen, Smith said.
