Bloomington church to host event in Nashville

City Church For All Nations of Bloomington will host a Brown County Healing Hands Service at The Salvation Army church, 168 S. Jefferson St., Friday, July 19 starting at 6 p.m.

Church members will give away 500 backpacks for students, as well as free food and bikes. All are welcome.

The portion of Jefferson Street in front of the church will be closed to traffic during the event.

Cottonwood Church to host VBS next week

JACKSON TWP. — Cottonwood Church, 2523 Cottonwood Road, will have Vacation Bible School from Sunday, July 21 to Thursday, July 25 for children in kindergarten through the sixth grade. Sessions run from 6 to 8 p.m.

At ROAR VBS, children will “discover that even though life gets wild, God is good.” ROAR is filled with Bible-learning experiences, Bible songs, team-building games and treats.

Market features demonstrations, recycling

BEAN BLOSSOM — The farmers market at St. David’s Episcopal Church is open from 4 to 7 p.m. each Friday through Aug. 31. The church is at state roads 45 and 135 North.

Each week, the market will have a demonstration table encouraging ways to reuse and recycle, conserve and preserve; methods of growing and cooking nutritional food; doing household cleaning without chemicals; and identifying invasive plants and encouraging native plants.

Other topics on growing, gardening and protecting the environment will be introduced throughout the weeks.

Kara Hammes from the Brown County Purdue Extension will present demonstrations for the children and adults. The Brown County Community Foundation will be in the Outreach Community Service Booth.

Local artisans will sell a wide varity of products including lawn décor, wind chimes, wool wall hangings, woven rugs, rock animals, greeting cards and jewelry available for Christmas in July shopping.

The Indiana Blood Center’s Bloodmobile will be at the market on July 26. Market Manager Sandy Higgins will be seeking and scheduling donors from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. that Friday. To donate, sign up at the outreach booth on market days or call Higgins.

SNAP, WIC and senior farmers market vouchers are honored for eligible purchases. SNAP tokens are available in the outreach booth.

Store to have used stamp and craft sale

Wishful Thinking, 150 S. Old School Way, began its annual Used Stamp and Craft Sale Wednesday, July 12 that will last through Saturday, July 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. Only cash will be accepted.

Visitors can sort through gently used or no-longer-wanted stamping and scrapbooking supplies. Call Wishful Thinking at 812-988-7009 if interested in selling items.

A preview party is planned on Tuesday, July 9 at 3 p.m. for those participating in the sale. Doors open on Friday, July 12 at 10 a.m. for people who are not selling their items in the sale.

History programs for kids offered downtown

The Hands on History program, for children ages 8 to 12, will take place monthly on Thursdays at the Brown County History Center on the following dates: July 18, Aug. 15, Sept. 29 and Oct. 24. The program enables children to engage in many of the day-to-day activities experienced by children living in pioneer times. Activities take place from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Pioneer Village and the History Center, 90 E. Gould St.

Planned topics tied to history will include hearthside cooking; dyeing yarn and weaving; household chores; Hoosier inventions; wildlife; braille and sign language; the Indiana state flag, seal, song, foods and tree; and one-room schoolhouse.

Library to celebrate 100th birthday

The Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane, will celebrate its 100th birthday the weekend of July 19 and 20.

Artists are invited to participate in a celebratory paint-out at the library on Friday from 8 a.m. to noon. Artists are responsible for supplying materials and equipment. Artwork will hang at the library through the remainder of July. Judging will take place at the library’s birthday party the following day, where patrons can vote for their favorite work.

The library birthday party will take place Saturday, July 20 from 2 to 4 p.m. All are welcome to enjoy live music, cake and ice cream, free books, arts and crafts demonstrations, a magic show, games, a bouncy house and giant bubbles.

Musicians Nathan Dillon and the Goodwill Girls (Angie Aumage and Joyce Cassel) will perform for children and adults. Alpacas will visit. Rich Hill will present a magic show at 2:45 p.m. Games will take place in the children’s garden.

A table has been set up in the library so that children can create cards wishing the library a happy birthday.

The library also will forgive late fees through July.

Bombing prevention awareness course scheduled

The County Office Building, 201 Locust Lane, will host the Department of Homeland Security’s Bombing Prevention Awareness Course on Friday, July 19 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The course provides knowledge of general bombing prevention measures, from improvised explosive device (IED) construction and classification through protective measures for potential bombing incidents. It is designed for “critical infrastructure” owner/operators, public safety personnel, emergency managers, law enforcement and special event security personnel.

There is no charge for the event. Lunch is not provided.

Thrive Alliance to offer caregiver support

Thrive Alliance will be starting a caregiver support and education group beginning Thursday, July 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Nashville United Methodist Church, 36 S. Jefferson St.

The purpose of the group is to offer support, information and education for anyone acting as a caregiver for a family member or loved one.

Required ServSafe class offered in July

A ServSafe Food Manager Certification class will be taught Tuesday and Wednesday, July 23 and 24 in the Salmon Room at the County Office Building, 201 Locust Lane. Start time for both days is 8:30 a.m., concluding at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday and 2:30 p.m.

ServSafe Food Manager Certification is good for five years. All retail food establishments must have a certified food manager on staff unless they are a nonprofit or serve only pre-packaged food.

The cost is $125 for the text, class and test. The class is limited to 12 participants.

Back-to-school event to be at high school

The annual back-to-school giveaway event On the Road Again will take place Saturday, July 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Larry C. Banks Memorial Gymnasium at Brown County High School.

Children will receive gently used outfits, coats, new underwear and socks, a pair of new shoes for physical education classes, pajamas, a bag of personal hygiene items and haircuts and styles by licensed professionals.

Guests will receive a shopping list at the door. Personal shoppers will be on hand to guide shoppers in making choices, finding correct sizes and carrying selected items.

Playhouse to host guitar festival, contest

The Brown County Playhouse, 70 S. Van Buren St., will host some of the nation’s finest musicians at the Indiana State Fingerstyle Guitar Fest Saturday, July 27.

Spectators can enjoy the talent of performers as they compete for the grand prize: handmade guitars and the opportunity to play at the evening concert. Daytime competition begins at 11 a.m. Tickets are $16.50. Wristbands will be issued so that attendees may come and go.

The evening concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $24.50 or $34.50 for VIP seating. The concert will feature the winner of the daytime competition as well as previous international winners Christie Lenée, Helen Avakian and Muriel Anderson.

Grandstand events at the Brown County 4-H Fair begin Saturday, July 27, all at 7 p.m.

Admission for most events is $10 for adults and $5 kids ages 4 to 11 unless otherwise specified.

On Sunday, July 28, the grandstand will be empty, but the Brown County Fair Queen/Princess Pageant will take place in the Pavilion at 8 p.m. No admission fee is charged.

Firefighters will serve fish fries monthly

BEAN BLOSSOM — Fruitdale volunteer firefighters will host fish fries from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays, Aug. 24, Sept. 7 and Oct. 5 at the fire station, 5200 State Road 135 North.

Volunteers prepare the food and provide a combo plate for $9, a number of side dishes, drinks and desserts, along with hot dogs and breaded tenderloins.

Market doing weekly ‘Market Bucks’ drawing

The Nashville Farmers Market is open Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Brown County Inn, 51 State Road 46 East.

The market has launched a free weekly drawing for “Market Bucks.” Visitors can enter to win market bucks that can be redeemed at any market vendor. Vendors offer an array of local produce, meat, baked goods, plants, and artisanal crafts and gifts.

Game library available at the local Toy Chest

The Toy Chest, 125 S. Van Buren St., has created a game library that locals can use for a $10 annual membership fee.

Game library members can check out one game at the Toy Chest register. Games can be kept for a week or they can be renewed for another week. If the game is late, $1 will be charged each day up to the price of the game.

Bluebird box sale to benefit local club

Recycle center will take bagged trash for $2

The Brown County Recycle Center now accepts trash at its drive-through during regular hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.

Drop-off costs $2 per bag. The center offers prepaid sticker books for $10 or $20, with five or 10 yellow stickers to affix to trash bags up to 55 gallons.

Book-a-Librarian service offered

Individuals or small groups can make an appointment with a Brown County Public Library librarian through the free Book-a-Librarian service.
