A nonpartisan discussion about the different healthcare policies being discussed as part of the 2020 elections, including Medicare for All, will take place Tuesday, Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. in the Salmon Room at the County Office Building, 201 Locust Lane, Nashville.

Health department offers back-to-school boosters

If you missed the vaccination clinic at the high school last week, there’s still time to get your children caught up on their required shots.

The Brown County Health Department, 201 Locust Lane, is able to accept patients with insurance (no copay required) and those without insurance, those who are under-insured and those on Medicaid.

There is no charge for vaccinations.

Schedule an appointment with the health department by calling 812-988-2255 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Annual fundraiser show set at Playhouse

The Playhouse will stage its annual fundraiser with a special preview of “Ring of Fire,” a musical about Johnny Cash, Friday, Aug. 16. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with pre-show activities of karaoke, a casual dinner, a cash bar and a silent auction. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. Guests are encouraged to wear black.

Tickets are $70 in honor of the Playhouse’s 70th anniversary and must be purchased before Saturday, Aug. 10. Proceeds go to Playhouse sustainability.

Other performances of “Walk the Line” will take place Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 17 and 18, and Friday through Sunday, Aug. 23, 24 and 25.

Community event to highlight local documentary

A free “Community Friend/Fun-Raiser” will take place at Rich and Lisa Hall’s Barn, 1743 Helmsburg Road, Saturday, Aug. 10 starting at noon.

The event will highlight the feature documentary film, “The Addict’s Wake,” created by award-winning production team Lisa Hall, Michael Husain and Amy Pauszek. The film is about the meth and opioid epidemic and is being shot in Brown County.

The community is invited to meet the filmmakers, mingle with neighbors and learn how they can help make the film.

Live entertainment will be provided by local musicians Ross Benson, Dry Red featuring Jeff Foster, Amanda Webb and Chuck Wills.

Hot dogs, drinks and more will be provided; bring lawn chairs.

Put in your fall mum orders with Psi Iotes

Psi Iota Xi is taking orders for its fall mum fundraiser to support Brown County High School scholarships and local art, music, literature, and speech and hearing needs.

Market features demonstrations, recycling

BEAN BLOSSOM — The farmers market at St. David’s Episcopal Church is open from 4 to 7 p.m. each Friday through Aug. 31. The church is at state roads 45 and 135 North.

The market features vendors selling locally made baked goods, fresh produce, and arts and crafts.

SNAP, WIC and senior farmers market vouchers are honored for eligible purchases. SNAP tokens are available in the outreach booth.

Market doing weekly ‘Market Bucks’ drawing

The Nashville Farmers Market is open Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Brown County Inn, 51 State Road 46 East.

The market has launched a free weekly drawing for “Market Bucks.” Visitors can enter to win market bucks that can be redeemed at any market vendor. Vendors offer an array of local produce, meat, baked goods, plants, and artisanal crafts and gifts.

Alpha Course offered through local church

Parkview Church, 1750 State Road 46 East, began an Alpha Course on Mondays that will continue through Nov. 25 from 5:50 to 8 p.m.

The Alpha Course offers a non-judgmental, non-denominational place to explore and discuss these questions with fellow seekers. Each week there is a meal, video and discussion. The group will discuss answers to questions such as, “What is the meaning of life?” “What am I doing here?” or “Is there a God?”

History programs for kids offered downtown

The Hands on History program, for children ages 8 to 12, will take place monthly on Thursdays at the Brown County History Center on Aug. 15, Sept. 29 and Oct. 24. The program enables children to engage in many of the day-to-day activities experienced by children living in pioneer times. Activities take place from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Pioneer Village and the History Center, 90 E. Gould St.

Planned topics tied to history will include hearthside cooking; dyeing yarn and weaving; household chores; Hoosier inventions; wildlife; braille and sign language; the Indiana state flag, seal, song, foods and tree; and one-room schoolhouse.

Country groups to perform at Bill Monroe

BEAN BLOSSOM — Diamond Rio and Restless Heart will be live in concert at Bill Monroe’s Music Park Saturday, Aug. 17 at 6 p.m.

Diamond Rio will play music from its new studio album, “I Made It.” Diamond Rio was the first country music group in history to reach No. 1 with a debut single.

Restless Heart will be performing its 35th Anniversary Tour. With six consecutive No. 1 hits, four of the band’s albums have been certified gold and it’s have won many awards, including the Academy of Country Music’s Top Vocal Group Trophy.

Family reunion to be at history center

The Hezekiah Deckard Reunion will take place Saturday, Aug. 17 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St.

Food pantry to sponsor drive at music center

Mother’s Cupboard will sponsor a food drive at both soft opening events at the Brown County Music Center, 200 Maple Leaf Boulevard.

Concert-goers are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items when attending music center events on Saturday, Aug. 17 and Wednesday, Aug. 21.

Mother’s Cupboard, on Memorial Drive in Nashville, provides daily meals free of charge and carry-out food items 364 days a year to Brown County residents in need. The pantry served 3,061 meals in June; donations of non-perishable food are always needed.

Firefighters will serve fish fries monthly

BEAN BLOSSOM — Fruitdale volunteer firefighters will host fish fries from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays, Aug. 24, Sept. 7 and Oct. 5 at the fire station, 5200 State Road 135 North.

Volunteers prepare the food and provide a combo plate for $9, a number of side dishes, drinks and desserts, along with hot dogs and breaded tenderloins.

The Brown County Humane Society and YMCA have partnered to host an event for dogs and their owners at Brown County State Park from Friday, Sept. 6 to Saturday, Sept. 8.

Participants will be able to enjoy hikes, agility challenges, 4-H demos, vets and Paws in Pool on Sunday.

Color Walk is fundraiser for preschool fees

The Brown County Community Foundation will host a Color Walk/Fun Run Saturday, Sept. 21 to raise money for preschool scholarships.

Over the last four years, the BCCF has provided $160,792 in grants for 101 children to attend preschool in Brown County Schools. The group needs help to fund this program for the spring semester.

The run/walk will start at the Brown County Music Center parking lot and go on the Salt Creek Trail, through Nashville and end at Hard Truth Hills with an after-party with music by Clayton Anderson. Along the walk, you’ll be blasted at various stations with vibrant colored, cornstarch-based powder.

This will be about a 2-mile route. There will be no winners or official times. Participants of all ages, including in strollers, are welcome.

The event is scheduled for between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Shuttle transportation will be available back to the music center.

To participate, create a team and invite your friends and family to join; or join an existing team. Raise $1,800 (the cost to sponsor a child’s preschool tuition for a year) and the BCCF will refund your registration fee.

Children younger than 4 can register for free when accompanied by a paying adult.

Game library available at the local Toy Chest

The Toy Chest, 125 S. Van Buren St., has created a game library that locals can use for a $10 annual membership fee.

Game library members can check out one game at the Toy Chest register. Games can be kept for a week or they can be renewed for another week. If the game is late, $1 will be charged each day up to the price of the game.

Bluebird box sale to benefit local club

Recycle center will take bagged trash for $2

The Brown County Recycle Center now accepts trash at its drive-through during regular hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.

Drop-off costs $2 per bag. The center offers prepaid sticker books for $10 or $20, with five or 10 yellow stickers to affix to trash bags up to 55 gallons.

Book-a-Librarian service offered

Individuals or small groups can make an appointment with a Brown County Public Library librarian through the free Book-a-Librarian service.
