Coach’s comments: The Eagles took home the trophy in the Steve Marurat Invitational with 12 points followed by Greencastle with 6 points, Brownstown Central with 4 and Southwestern with 3 points. The Eagles put themselves in position to win by winning four first-round matches, thereby placing four teams or individuals in the finals. Aaron McCann struggled a little in the second set, losing 2-6 (his first of the season), but prevailed in the third set tie-break to win his match. Aaron then settled in to win the championship. Josh Miller playing No. 2 singles had a little better day in winning both his matches in strong fashion. He played very smart and controlled tennis today. With Nolan Patterson switching to singles today, it took a set to get back in acclimated to the change in play. Once he settled down he played the steady game that he is known for and captured a third championship for the Eagles. Our fourth championship came from our No. 2 doubles team of Noah and Spencer playing up to No. 1. They repeatedly showed glimpses of some really strong tennis today, with the best coming at a point in the second set of the championship storming back from being down 5-4 to win 7-5. Our new No. 2 doubles duo of Reid and Eli started out strong in both of their matches today, but seemed to lose their rhythm as the sets progressed. I look for them to continue to improve throughout the rest of the season. The Eagles will enjoy the rest of the holiday weekend, but will have three matches next week, all on the road, with a conference foe, Owen Valley, on Thursday, Sept. 5. This team has improved with each match and I know that is a trend that will continue.

Brown Co.: 6-1 (1-1 WIC)

No. 1 doubles: Daniel Cr (TC) d. Eli Sichting/Austen Deckard (BC) 6-4

No. 2 doubles: Evan Uhls/Oliver Gearlds (TC) d. Austen Deckard/Eli Sichting (BC) 6-0

Coach’s comments: The Eagles continued their winning ways tonight by defeating the Tigers from Triton Central. We seemed a little sluggish from the start by three of us going three sets. Aaron and Reid won in straight sets. Our other three varsity players and teams all stumbled in a set, but came out on top. The JV teams once again had to play multiple matches and had a difficult time finding a playing rhythm. The Eagles take the courts again tomorrow to play Columbus East.

Brown Co.: 7-1 (1-1 WIC)

No. 2 singles: Daylen Dees (BC) d. Caleb Schrock (CE) 8-5

No. 1 doubles: Eli Sichting/Austen Deckard (BC) d. Bridger Wagner/Jimmy Clark (CE) 8-4

No. 2 doubles: Eli Sichting/Austen Deckard (BC) d. Ben Stenner/Gowthamm Mandala (CE) 6-0

Coach’s comments: The Eagles traveled to sectional for Columbus East and won 3-2. The deciding match came down to a third set 6-4 at No. 2 doubles won by Noah Cochran and Spencer Blee. I was really proud of how they increased their intensity and shot selection to come from behind 2-4. Aaron and the doubles duo of Aiden and Nolan picked off from where they have been all season. The JV Eagles were victorious with a first win by freshman Daylen Dees and a double win by Austen and Eli to lead them to victory. The Eagles will travel Spencer tomorrow for another WIC match. The Eagles look to avenge a 1-4 loss to Owen Valley last year to finish second in the WIC East.

JV

Brown County 1, Owen Valley 0

No. 1 doubles: Eli Sichting/Austen Deckard (BC) def Connor Rogers/Drew Kristoff (OV) 6-2

Coach’s comments: The Eagles completed the week 3-0 with a WIC victory over Owen Valley 5-0. Our guys came to play tonight, especially with a chance to win another WIC match against a budding rival with Owen Valley. Aaron continued to serve and hit and play at a high level. Josh played his best match of the week against a feisty opponent at No. 2 singles. Reid at No. 3 singles just went out played a very consistent and steady match. The No. 1 doubles team of Aiden and Nolan were dominant from the start by jumping out in both sets to a 4-1 lead and then finishing off their opponent to win in straight sets. Spencer and Noah once again were slow to start, having to come from behind 1-4, to win 7-5 and 6-4. With the varsity match already over when Austen and Eli took the court for their JV match, it was decided to only play a set, which they were well in control of from the beginning. The Eagles will be back in action next week for three matches as they travel to Martinsville on Monday, play WIC team West Vigo at Edgewood on Wednesday and return home on Thursday to play another WIC team in Edgewood.

Brown Co.: Allison Stogsdill 85 (all-conference), Taylor Poling 89 (all-conference), Aubrey Hollander 98, Avery Patterson 109, Courtney Hill 120

Coach’s comments: Although the Brown County High School golfers knocked 12 strokes off last year’s WIC performance with a 381, they still had to settle for third place behind runner-up Indian Creek and conference champion Northview at Forest Park Golf Course in Brazil. Firing career-best rounds were seniors Allison Stogsdill at 85 and Taylor Poling at 89 who led the Eagles and whose performances earned them all-conference honors. Fellow senior Aubrey Hollander contributed a 98, while freshman Avery Patterson posted a 109 to complete the Eagle scoring. “Only two of the five golfers competed in this event at this course last year, so to better last season’s performance and snag another third-place finish is certainly respectable,” claimed Brown County co-coach Brad Baughman. “Ben (co-coach) and I are extremely proud of these young ladies and were often impressed with their shot making.” The Eagles have only one scheduled match next week, a Wednesday, Sept. 4 date with Eastern Greene at Hidden Hills Golf Course.

Sept. 4

Brown County 231, Eastern Greene 256

Brown Co.: Ainslie Winton 49 (medalist), Avery Patterson 59, Annika Evenson 61, Abby Padgett 62, Mattie Satter 69, Kaitlyn Doss 69

Coach’s comments: After their third-place finish in the WIC over the weekend, the BCHS golfers traveled to Hidden Hills Golf Course on Wednesday and came home with a win over Eastern Greene. Sophomore Ainslie Winton’s 49 led the Eagles and took medalist honors. Also scoring for the Eagles were Avery Patterson with a 59, Annika Evenson with a 61, and Abby Padgett with a 62. Mattie Satter and Kaitlyn Doss played in their first match, each carding a 69. “We took four sophomores and two freshmen, intending to give some of the younger players experience on an unfamiliar course. With less than three weeks left in the regular season, we will be looking for a player or two to round out our sectional lineup,” stated co-coach Brad Baughman. The Eagles’ top three players, seniors Taylor Poling, Allison Stogsdill and Aubrey Hollander, did not make the trip and stayed home to work on their games. The next scheduled event for the Eagles is a home match on Tuesday, Sept. 10, with Owen Valley. Following the match, the team will honor its three seniors at a reception at Salt Creek Golf Retreat.
