Pioneer Women

The Pioneer Women’s Club meets each Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St. Interested women are welcome.

Woodworkers club

CHRISTIANSBURG — The Brown County Woodworkers Club will meet Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. at Charlie Roush’s workshop, 6987 Christianburg Road.

Rotary club

The Brown County Rotary Club will meet at 7:15 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7th at Nashville’s Artists Colony Inn, 105 S. Van Buren St.

The guest speakers will be Laura Hammack, fellow Rotarian and superintendent of Brown County Schools, and six students returning from a Rotary Youth Leadership Award weekend Oct. 19-20 at Bradford Woods.

After graduating from DePauw University, Hammack taught at Nashville Elementary, was principal at Helmsburg Elementary and was assistant superintendent of Brown County Schools while earning a master’s degree from Indiana University and a doctorate degree from Indiana State University. She left Brown County to become assistant superintendent of Beech Grove City Schools and returned to Brown County as superintendent in 2016. Hammack serves as a regional trustee for Ivy Tech Community College, on the Dean’s Advancement Team for the Bayh College of Education at Indiana State University, on the governing board of the West Central Indiana Service Center, the Brown County YMCA, the Brown County Drug Free Task Force, and the Brown County Birth to Five Partnership.

Hammack will discuss the five-year, $5.5 million federal grant awarded by the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching to expand and sustain work to support teachers and improve students’ academic success. The funds will used to implement the TAP System for Teacher and Student Advancement, a program consisting of additional compensation for taking on leadership roles, professional development, and incentives for instructional accountability.

The RYLA students are Arianna and Christian Hunt, Caiden Spahr, Arto Ganjalyan (an exchange student from Armenia), Cassidy Davis and Kristy Sebastian. Arianna, Christian and Caiden are home schooled and Arto, Cassidy and Kristy attend BCHS. They will comment on the intensive leadership education they experienced at RYLA.

Members of the community are invited to attend, especially those interested in exploring opportunities to participate in projects and to be of service to our community.

Garden club

The Brown County Garden Club will meet on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 10:30 a.m. at the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane.

The guest speaker will be Kris Medic of the Indiana Native Plant Society. Her presentation will be over “Invasive Plants We Know Too Well,” about invasive plants and what native options can replace them. All are welcome.

Art alliance

The Art Alliance Brown County will meet at Brown County State Park’s Abe Martin Lodge on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 5:30 p.m.

All interested artists are invited to join and network while enjoying the lodge. Dinner/drinks can be ordered at your own cost, if you wish. Guests are welcome. The meeting will be in the grand fireplace room off the main dinning room.

Cemetery preservation

The Brown County Cemetery Preservation Society meets the second Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be in the archives room at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St., Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 4:15 p.m.

The society is a committee of the Peaceful Valley Heritage group. All are welcome.

Peaceful Valley Heritage

Peaceful Valley Heritage Inc., a preservation group, meets the second Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be at the Brown County Community Foundation building, 209 N. Van Buren St., on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome.

Genealogical society

The Brown County Genealogical Society has three upcoming events:

  • Thursday, Nov. 14: Author Jen Selinsky will visit for a special presentation, “Written Heritage: Finding My Ancestry Through a Journal,” at 1 p.m. at the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane. She will talk about her great-grandmother, Alwine Baurman, and her travel journal, “First Generation Abroad.” After the presentation, Selinsky will have copies of the book available for purchase, as well as the original journal for browsing.
  • Thursday, Dec. 12: Annual Christmas party, 1 p.m. at the library. Members will bring desserts and/or finger foods. Visitors are welcome.
  • Thursday, Jan. 9: Annual membership meeting, 1 p.m. at the library. Agenda includes election of a board member, discussing ideas for upcoming meetings, sharing of research successes and “brick walls.”

Herb society

The Brown County Herb Society meets the third Monday of each month. The club will meet in the lower level at the Brown County Public Library on Monday, Nov. 18 at 3 p.m. All are welcome to join.
