‘You make a difference’: Grandparents visit with grandkids at Sprunica Elementary School

Grandparents were invited to visit Sprunica Elementary School on Oct. 17. Principal Shane Killinger said 200 grandparents visited their grandchildren in their classrooms. The hour long visit was split into two 30 minute shifts so that grandparents could visit more than one classroom. Submitted

Sprunica Elementary School had 200 special visitors on Oct. 17 when grandparents stopped by for refreshments, crafts and quality time with their grandchildren in their classrooms.

Previously, the school had hosted night activities for grandparents. “One of the things I kept being told was they would love to do something during the day,” Principal Shane Killinger said.

“We then made Grandparents Night a family game night, which was pretty well attended. But Grandparents Day was crazy busy.”

Killinger said the grandparents loved coming to see the kids in their classrooms. The hourlong visit was split into two 30-minute shifts for grandparents who wanted to visit more than one classroom.

Killinger said the plan is to have Grandparents Day around the same time next year, but it will be split into three 20-minute shifts because some grandparents had three grandkids in the building.

Fourth-grade students served as ambassadors for the day. They took the grandparents to each classroom and helped count the visitors.

“What I said to the grandparents when I greeted them was that there is proof that a student who has a great relationship with the grandparents is happier and more successful than those who don’t. We just want to foster that,” Killinger said.

“I told them, ‘Thank you for coming; you make a difference in your grandkids’ life. I know you know that, but I wanted to tell you that.’”
