Grant award to be presented in Helmsburg this week

HELMSBURG — The Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs has awarded Helmsburg $600,000 toward the renovation and completion of the stormwater drainage system that began several years ago.

An awards ceremony will be at the Brown County Community Church Pavilion, 2370 West Main Street, on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 2:45 p.m.

All are welcome to bring a lawn chair and wear a mask to the celebration.

On Aug. 6, Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch and OCRA announced that Brown County received a $600,000 grant to help cover the costs to improve flood drainage in Helmsburg. Twenty-three other Hoosier communities also received portions of $15.3 million federal grant to improve water infrastructure.

Old storm sewers will be replaced along Helmsburg Road, Main Street and First Street with new piping, according to the press release.

Storm sewers along the eastern portion of North Street will also be extended. Drainage ditch improvements will also be made in several areas throughout Helmsburg. Areas will also receive street inlets that did not have any before.

Annual auction happening online next month

The 43rd annual Brown County Children’s Auction will happen virtually beginning Saturday, Nov. 18 at 8 a.m. and closes at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2.

Bidding for items will take place on the auction’s Facebook page in the comments section under photos of the items. Visit facebook.com/bcchildrensauction for instructions and bidding.

All proceeds are used to buy clothes for Brown County children in need.

Library has secondhand books and more available

The Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane, has its Book Nook open, with a variety of used books, audio books, music on CD and DVDs for children, adults and teens.

All are welcome to browse the sidewalk carts near the entryway of the upper level of the library, or come inside and browse during the library open hours: Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Annual mega sale planned at Parkview church

Parkview Church of the Nazarene will host a Mega Rummage Sale on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Several families will be selling all kinds of items.

The sale will be in the church’s gym building at 1750 State Road 46 East.

To have a booth and sell items, email [email protected]. Booths cost $20 each and proceeds benefit Parkview Church’s Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes.

Parkview Church will have a “donation only” booth for gently used items to donate. All proceeds from donated items will go toward Parkview’s Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes.

Thrive Alliance holding virtual information session

Volunteer Advocates for Seniors and Incapacitated Adults (VASIA) help enhance an individual’s quality of life by making decisions on that person’s behalf which reflect, as much as possible, the individual’s own choices and preferences. Thrive Alliance is holding an informational session for those who may be interested in serving as volunteer advocates. A virtual session is being offered via Zoom on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 5:30 p.m.

Blood drive coming up at the Y

The American Red Cross will host a blood drive at the Brown County YMCA, 105 Willow St., from 2 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 26.

A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Donors who are 17, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate.

Therapeutic music event planned at public library

Centerstone is organizing a therapeutic art opportunity at the Brown County Public Library this fall.

Community Music Fun will take place Saturday, Nov. 7 at 10:30 a.m. at the library. Participants can join for an hour of drumming, music-making and songwriting. No experience is necessary. Drums will be provided or participants can bring their own.

Annual tree lighting ceremony set for November

The sixth annual Community Tree Lighting will take place on Friday, Nov. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St. This year’s ceremony will be a mini ceremony with lighting the tree, the History Center and the school house to kick off the holiday season.

Visitors are asked to wear masks and socially distance. The 2020 souvenir wooden nickels will be passed out next year along with the 2021 wooden nickel. The History Center will be closed during the ceremony. Recorded music will be played, but no live music, snacks or hot chocolate will be provided.

Nashville Farmers Market still open Sundays

The Nashville Farmers Market is open every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Brown County Inn parking lot, 51 State Road 46 East.

Shoppers can find seasonal produce grown by local farmers, eggs and baked goods. Local growers also offer vegetable starts for gardens, deer-resistant and native plants for landscaping, house plants, perennials and annuals to spruce up patios and porches.

Local crafters and artists share their talents in a variety of forms: Pottery, quilting, jewelry and more. Locally made goat’s milk soaps and bath and body products are also available.

Vendors are socially distanced to prevent the spread of COVID-19. All vendors wear masks and provide hand sanitizer. Shoppers are encouraged to wear face covers. The market offers free masks to those who don’t have their own.

The market doubles SNAP and WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program benefits up to $10 per shopper per week. Stop by the information booth for details.

Local bluebird club selling nesting boxes
