POLICE BLOTTER: Man accused of fleeing police; Invasion of privacy charge for Plainfield man; Battery charge made towards Morgantown man

Local man faces multiple charges after police chase

A man from Nashville has been charged with a Level 6 felony and Class A misdemeanor for resisting law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor for driving while suspended and a Class B misdemeanor for leaving the scene of an accident on Aug. 3.

Deputy William Pool with the Brown County Sheriff’s Office was monitoring traffic on Peoga Road when a motorcycle driven by 36-year-old Travas Haines passed Pool.

According to the probable cause affidavit, the motorcycle had a moped license attached to it.

Pool began to pursue Haines, who reportedly passed a vehicle on a double yellow line.

Deputy Zach Sheppard also pursued.

Haines did not stop and continued to pass multiple vehicles, according to the affidavit.

Pool eventually caught up to the motorcycle on Gold Point Road. Haines continued onto Upper Salt Creek Road then to Sprunica Road. Sheriff Scott Southerland had blocked the 2800 block of Sprunica Road with his vehicle.

There was an opening in the road, and Haines passed Southerland the affidavit says.

As Haines approached the intersection of Sprunica and Beanblossom Roads, he came to a complete stop then turned onto Beanblossom Road.

Det. Paul Henderson had blocked an area of Beanblossom Road and as he was in the process of exiting his vehicle, Haines reportedly passed and struck the side of Henderson’s vehicle.

Haines turned from Beanblossom Road to Gatesville Road, then to Sweetwater Trail and finally to Petro Road.

The affidavit says that Haines was traveling at speeds between 25 and 80 miles per hour.

Once on Petro Road, he turned onto a gravel lane and fled into the woods on the motorcycle.

Pool exited his vehicle and pursued Haines on foot. He made contact with Haines in the woods, who got off the bike and began to run in the opposite direction of Pool.

Pool then fired his taser at Haines, who was struck and fell to the ground. Pool told Haines stay on the ground and put his hands on his back, which he did.

Pool asked Haines why he fled and he said he was just trying to get the motorcycle to his home.

Haines was booked into Brown County Jail and formally charged on Aug. 4.

Man from Plainfield charged with invasion of privacy

A 34-year-old man from Plainfield, Dustin Howard, has been charged with a Level 6 felony and Class A misdemeanor for invasion of privacy.

On Aug. 16 Brown County Det. Paul Henderson observed communication between Howard and a woman “with whom he had a no-contact order.”

Charges were formally filed against Howard in the Brown County Prosecutor’s Office on Aug. 17.

Morgantown man faces battery charge

A man from Morgantown faces a Class A misdemeanor for domestic battery after an incident in August.

On Aug. 14 Brown County Deputy Kyle Minor was dispatched to a residence on Woodland Lake Road for a welfare check requested by adult protective services on an individual who had reportedly been choked, bruised and “threatened with death,” according to the probable cause affidavit.

Upon arrival, Minor made contact with 42-year-old Jason Knight of Morgantown, who was outside.

Minor also made contact with the victim, who was inside.

The victim told Minor she had been contacted by adult protective services after a hospital had contacted them on her behalf.

The victim told Minor she had fallen in the barn on the property and had some bruising on her arm. Minor asked what had bruised her arm and she eventually told him that Knight had bruised her.

She told police she did not want to file charges.

Minor then made contact with Knight, who told police he and the victim had been arguing that she started throwing objects at him and that he grabbed her to stop her from throwing things.

He then said that when he let go of her she fell to the ground because of her bad hip.

The victim told police she did throw an object at him when he came towards her and said he was going to kill her, according to the affidavit. Knight told police that the victim told him that she was going to kill him, the affidavit says.

The victim did not want to fill out a witness statement.

Knight was booked into Brown County Jail and formally charged on Aug. 15.
