Nashville has a new town marshal who’s a Brown County native and a veteran of the Brown County Sheriff’s Department.

The Nashville Town Council on Monday evening voted to hire Kenny Murphy of Morgantown to serve as the top law enforcement officer in Nashville.

Murphy, who lives in Morgantown and is a Brown County native, comes from the Martinsville Police Department, where he has served as deputy chief since April 2021.

According to the Martinsville Police Department, Murphy has served there since 2001, before which he served as a deputy with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department, beginning in 1995.

Murphy’s hiring comes after the town council demoted former Police Chief Heather Burris over alleged performance issued in August. Since that time, Scott Bowling has served as interim chief. Burris resigned her position at a meeting of the Nashville Safety Board earlier Monday.
