Statehouse candidate decries ‘cost of the culture wars’

To the editor:

To the citizens of Brown County, I’ve spent the last 14 months talking with folks across Indiana State House District 62 (which includes all of Brown County). These conversations have confirmed what I suspected all along: when we get down to it, we have more that unites us than divides us.

Most Hoosiers believe that people who work for a living ought to be able to afford a life. Most Hoosiers believe our kids should be free to pursue their dreams in well-funded public schools. Most Hoosiers believe that we should protect our water quality, our air quality, and our beautiful forests and other natural resources. Unfortunately, for more a decade now, our state government has been more focused on fighting culture wars than protecting these shared values, and this has come at a real cost to Indiana.

For example, did you know that just this year CNBC ranked Indiana as the second worst state in the country for quality of life? Did you know that Indiana is 47th in the nation for wage growth? Did you know that 25% of Indiana’s counties are “maternity care deserts” and that Brown county is one of those counties? Did you know that we have the most polluted waterways in the country? Did you know that over the last seven years Brown County schools have lost nearly $3 million to fund vouchers for wealthy families in other counties? I could go on and on.

If we want different results for our state, we need different leadership in state government. We simply can’t afford the continued cost of the culture wars. If you agree, I’d ask that you vote for me, Thomas Horrocks, to be your state representative so we can send the message together that we deserve a state government that focuses on solving the real problems facing everyday Hoosiers.

Thomas Horrocks,

Democratic candidate for Indiana House District 62
