Multiple accidents with injuries reported over holiday weekend

Police and EMS were busy over the holiday weekend responding to three crashes with injuries throughout the county.

The first crash was reported on Saturday, May 23 just after 1 p.m. in the 1200 block of State Road 135 South, in the Camp Roberts area.

Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy William Pool reported finding a motorcycle driver, 59-year-old Christopher Nelson of Columbus, lying on the ground, conscious and alert, the accident report states.

Nelson told Pool he was driving south on 135 South when he came up on a car driving slowly. He followed the car and it began to slow down more. Nelson said he thought the car was slowing to let him pass, but as he began to pass the car, it turned into a driveway, the report states. This caused Nelson to hit his brakes and and go off the road. He estimated he was driving 30 mph when he left the road on his motorcycle.

Nelson was taken by EMS to Columbus Regional Hospital for a shoulder and upper arm injury. He was wearing a helmet, the report said.

Pool and EMS were out responding to another motorcycle crash just after 6 p.m. on May 23, this time in the 3600 block of 46 East. When Pool arrivede, both the driver and passenger were in the ambulance.

The motorcycle driver, Stephen Stickford, 68, of St. Louis, Missouri, had a gash on his left thigh. Both Stickford and his passenger were taken to CRH for their injuries. Stickford’s passenger was complaining of pain, the report states.

Stickford and his passenger told Pool they had pulled off to the side of the highway to wait out the rain on their bike when they were hit from behind by a vehicle driven by Courtney Roberts, 24, of Nashville. The crash threw Stickford and his passenger from the bike.

Roberts told police that it was raining heavily and she had driven into the rumble strips along the fog line, which pulled her over the line and into the motorcycle, the report states.

It was marked “unknown” in the report if Roberts was injured. She was wearing a seat belt.

The next day, officers and EMS responded to a third crash with injuries, this time on State Road 45 near the Railroad Road intersection.

The driver, Jerrica McCullough, 25, of Indianapolis, told Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Kyle Minor that she could not see due to rain and she was unfamiliar with the area, the accident report states. She told police she tried to stop, but was unable to do so in time, causing her to crash near the railroad stop.

McCullough reported having chest pains and she had a small cut on her head. She was checked out and cleared by EMS at the scene.

McCullough was wearing a seat belt. Her vehicle was towed from the scene due to disabling damage.

Officers also responded to two property-damage crashes on May 22 and a crash on May 24 that ended up not involving injuries.
