Community conversation to be on arts promotion

At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, the League of Women Voters of Brown County will sponsor a community conversation at the Brown County Public Library, 205 N. Locust Lane.

The third conversation this year in an ongoing series on wellness and heritage tourism and living will begin with remarks by eight panelists followed by audience discussion.

Topics will be “Memory, creation and performance: Our rich heritage of artists” (fine arts, music, theater, traditional arts and storytelling); “A center for the arts: Bringing together all venues” (brick and online) for coordinated programming, education, and entertainment; and “Making it happen: Coordination, marketing and promotion.”

The panel will include Lyn Letsinger Miller speaking about Brown County’s place in the larger art world; Jon Kay about music and traditional arts in Brown County; Pam Raider on the storytelling tradition in Brown County; Scott Hutchinson on the “Our Town” initiative and networking assets; Kathy Anderson on theater and the larger role of the Playhouse; Nancy Crocker on the role of the chamber and local entrepreneurship; and Joe Wray on the role of local government.

Dick Ferrer to teach painting class

The next Partake class will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at Chateau Thomas Winery, Coachlight Square, 225 S. Van Buren St.

Dick Ferrer will lead a lesson on landscapes, “Painting acrylics from dark to light.” He will show the process from prepped canvas to finished painting. As a self-taught artist, Ferrer shows “value” is not worth, but how contrast, light, shade and tone can interplay within a painting.

Sponsored by Art Alliance Brown County, the program is suitable for beginners through experienced painters. All materials and supplies are provided and the instructor provides individualized assistance to participants. A $40 fee includes snacks and wine or beverage of choice.
