VAN BUREN TWP. — High wind toppled trees and power lines over the weekend, causing power outages across several counties and a fire in Van Buren Township.The fire, in the 8600 block of Mt. Nebo Road the afternoon of April 2, is believed to have started after a power line fell off Mt. Nebo Church, Van Buren Volunteer Fire Chief John Ward said.

Harrison Township Volunteer Fire Department in Bartholomew County, Brown County (Nashville) Volunteer Fire Department and Pershing Township Volunteer Fire Department in Freetown assisted.

“They get the fire almost put out, then the wind would shift or pick up again. Then it would just take off again. The good thing was that each time it took off, it was smaller,” Ward said.

About seven acres were burned. The fire had spread into a nearby valley, but firefighters were able to contain it at the bottom before it spread again, Ward said.

No one was injured and no structures were damaged, he said.

Meanwhile, a falling tree knocked out a power transmission line to Nashville, causing 2,000 Brown County Duke Energy customers’ homes and businesses to go dark at around 5:30 p.m. April 2.

The next morning, 750 customers were still without power, and the final 80 of them were expected to have service restored by midnight April 3.
