Allen H. Pickard, 94, died Tuesday morning, May 3, 2016, at Brown County Health & Living Community in Nashville. He was a resident of Brown County and former resident of Indianapolis.

Allen was born in Marion, Massachusetts, on March 7, 1922, to the late Guy and Caroline (Higgins) Pickard. After high school, he went on to serve as a private with the United States Army. He received his bachelor’s degree in history from Dartmouth College and went on to earn his master’s in history from the University of Connecticut.

Allen retired in 1984 from the Defense Information School at Fort Harrison, where he proudly worked as a professor for 35 years. He was a member of Brown County Presbyterian Fellowship Church in Nashville. Allen enjoyed studying genealogy, keeping up with current events and politics and was a collector of antiques and artwork. He was a fan of hockey, enjoyed taking care of stray animals and feeding the hummingbirds. Allen was also very proud to have lived in every New England state.

Allen is survived by his children, Janet C. (Mike) Bernstein of Los Gatos, California, Todd S. (Jayne) Pickard of New York, New York, David S. (Jae) Pickard of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Henry R. Pickard of Brown County; grandchildren, Sarah, Benjamin, Jessica, Keith, Alexander and Christopher; great-grandchildren, Sam, Julian, Grace and Addie.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Ruth E. (Gormley) Pickard, whom he married on April 28, 1951, in East Haven, Connecticut.

The Rev. Scott Seay will conduct a celebration of Allen’s life at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 12, at Brown County Presbyterian Fellowship Church, 602 State Road 135 North.

Friends can call from 10 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church.

Inurnment will take place in East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.

Cremation services were entrusted to Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center in Morgantown.

Memorial contributions may be sent in honor of Allen to the Brown County Presbyterian Fellowship Church building fund, 602 State Road 135 North, Nashville, IN 47448.
