Students celebrate cultures at international fair

Sixth-graders at Brown County Intermediate School provided visitors with a taste of world culture from Albania to Japan at the school’s international fair May 16.

Social studies teacher Nicole Wells began the fair five years ago when she taught at Van Buren Elementary School, then continued it at the intermediate school.

Most projects students completed on their own, but they worked on their exhibit boards in groups, Wells said.

Students researched countries for six weeks, including geography, government and the culture; then wrote a nine-paragraph paper to show what they learned, Wells said.

They even interviewed officials with the U.S. State Department and the international studies department at Indiana University.

Students also were able to hear from people from different cultural backgrounds in person. Guest speakers were from Argentina, Switzerland, Korea and Japan.

On the day of the fair, students were encouraged to make or bring in food dishes from their country.

A performance by an Afro-Peruvian band from Indiana University earlier in the month was also a part of the fair, Wells said.”
