INDIANAPOLIS — A man was shot and killed May 27 in Indianapolis by Indiana State Police who were assisting Brown County detectives in serving a search warrant.

Indiana State Police said just after 11:30 a.m. Friday, a man, appearing to be in his late 50s, was shot and killed after pointing a long gun at state police at a home in the 100 block of West Gimber Street on the southwest side of Indianapolis.

Members of an Indiana State Police SWAT team were assisting detectives with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department in an investigation about a suspect who was believed to have fired multiple gunshots into a Brown County home on May 7, state police said.

Detectives were searching for guns, shotgun shells and a cellphone at the Gimber Street address.

When officers knocked and announced their purpose to serve a search warrant, there was no answer, state police said.

Before entering, the officers were confronted by the person with a long gun, state police said. The suspect was told to put the gun down but instead raised the gun toward a SWAT team member, who shot the armed suspect.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. State police said they will release his identity once he is formally identified and his next of kin are notified.

The name of the trooper who shot the man will be released within the next 72 hours, state police said.

The dispatch log from May 7 shows that three officers were called to the 6100 block of Bittersweet Road for “shots fired” just before 11 p.m.

Deputy Greg Pittman, public information officer for the Brown County Sheriff’s Department, said Friday evening that no report from the May 7 incident was being released at this time, as it is an open investigation.
