BLOOMINGTON — With the amount on talent represented in the 100-meter dash in Friday’s Girls Track and Field State Finals, Kathleen McCann didn’t have any illusions of a high finish.

But McCann, who was seeded 25th, did improve both her position and her time from last week’s Bloomington North Regional. She finished 21st in 12.80 seconds.

“I did what I came to do,” McCann said. “I came to run. I came to represent Brown County.”

McCann’s time was a little off her school record of 12.64 but better than her regional time of 12.89.

“My time was better than I thought it would be,” McCann said. “I was hoping to beat that (record) today, but it just didn’t work out. My goal was to finish anywhere from 15 to 25.”

Pike junior Lynna Irby ran a state-record 11.50 in the finals to win her third consecutive title in the event. Irby also won the 400 and 200 for the third straight year.

Bloomington South senior Megan Grabowski had the fastest time in the preliminaries at 11.77. Grabowski, the state runner-up in the 100 and 200 last season, injured a hamstring in the 100 finals.

“These girls are so amazing,” McCann said. “They’re so fast. They’re wonderful athletes, they’re wonderful competitors and they’re friends of mine. I came in with the mindset of, ‘Their times are good, so go in, don’t get last and try and do your best with your time.’ I’m happy with it.”

Irby ran 11.78 to win the heat in which McCann competed.

“I had not met her before, but she did come up and tell me ‘Good job’ after the race,” McCann said. “She’s such an amazing athlete, being able to run as a sophomore on Team USA.”

McCann was the lone Brown County girl to compete Friday. She was making her first state finals appearance.

“It’s an improvement from last season,” McCann said. “I was happy with it. I was happy with the chance to go to state. So hopefully, I can keep moving forward for next year.”
