New Morgantown marshal named

Brown County High School’s Transportation Director is still helping to direct traffic, just in a different uniform.

Jeff Deckard started working June 2 as the town marshal in Morgantown.

Deckard — Brown County’s chief deputy before moving to the schools job — will lead a force of two full-time officers and three or four reserve officers.

He took the job because he wanted to go back into law enforcement while still working in a small community, he said. Morgantown also offered a beneficial pay and benefits package, he added.

He has some experience working in Morgan County from his time with the state police, and is familiar with the county prosecutor and sheriff, he said.

A graduate of Northwestern University’s 10-week police staffing school, Deckard said he also looks forward to an opportunity to put his administrative knowledge to use in addition to his background as a field officer.

Deckard’s first task will be reviewing how Morgantown’s officers spend most of their hours, and determining if there are ways to improve the way they’re working with the community.

“I think the biggest thing that we had talked about with the council is they’d certainly want to make sure that their police officers are completely involved and have the community in mind,” he said.
