VAN BUREN TWP. — A Nashville man faces multiple felony charges including dealing in methamphetamine after police served a search warrant on his home June 4.
While watching the home the night before, police also arrested two other men on preliminary charges of possession of marijuana and paraphernalia.
A search warrant was served at the home of Charles Lee Hessman, 68, in the 700 block of Combs Road. Police reported finding several packages of a crystal substance that tested positive for methamphetamine, according to a probable cause affidavit.
During the search, Hessman pulled out a mirror with methamphetamine and a straw on it, and a small baggie of heroin from a desk drawer, the report said. Two plastic bag corners with white crystals in it were found in a drawer next to his bed, the affidavit said.
Police also reported finding a small digital scale with white powder residue on it, plastic baggies, two packages containing heroin weighing about four grams,a safe containing about 56 grams of marijuana, two grinders and a bullet-shaped pipe.
Another man, Robert Smith, 44, Columbus, was also arrested at the home on preliminary charges of visiting a common nuisance, according to a press release from the Brown County Sheriff’s Department. No formal charges have been filed against him at press time.
Prior to the search, Deputy Brian Shrader pulled over a truck that left the home. He saw the driver was not wearing a seat belt.
The driver, Kyle Beckemeyer, 19, Columbus, told Shrader his license was suspended and that he did not have his ID with him. His passenger, later identified as Terry Wyatt, 57, Plainfield, initially gave Shrader a false name and birth date.
ISP Trooper Richard Klun and Klun’s K9 arrived to assist, and the K9 indicated the presence of narcotics in the vehicle.
A search of Beckemeyer yielded a methamphetamine pipe, the report said. In the vehicle, police reported finding a bag of marijuana, an empty bag with white residue in it and another methamphetamine pipe.
Beckemeyer told police that he was at the house with Wyatt, but he stayed outside. Wyatt came back with a pipe full of methamphetamine that the two men smoked next to the Hessman home, the affidavit for Hessman’s arrest said.
Shrader also found Wyatt’s ID in the truck. Wyatt told the officer he lied about his name because he knew he had a warrant out for his arrest.
Beckemeyer was booked into jail on preliminary charges of driving while suspended, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia, according to jail records. He had not been formally charged at press time.
Wyatt was booked in on preliminary charges of failure to appear, failure to identify, and possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. He was formally charged June 6 with false informing, a Class B misdemeanor; possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor; and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.
