Summer Reading Club events planned at library

Summer Reading Club events at the Brown County Public Library in Nashville library will take place at 1:30 p.m. Thursdays, June 16, 23, 30 and July 7 and 14.

At the Cordry-Sweetwater branch in the lot owners’ clubhouse, the events are at 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays, June 21, 28 and July 5 and 12.

Other summer sessions at the Nashville branch Wednesdays through July 13, include children’s programs:

• 2 p.m. — Be the Book, for 11 and younger, reading aloud from favorite stories and creating productions, minus the stage and props.
• 3 p.m. — LEGO Club, for 12 and younger, for an hour of creative free-play building.

Free bags of food for backpack students

Brown County Weekend Backpacks is providing a bag of food for the weekend to students who have been on the free lunch program during the school year. Parents may come by the Food Services Building (across Schoolhouse Lane from the junior high) on Thursdays between 4 and 6 p.m. and pick up a bag of food for students.

The program will begin Thursday, June 9 and run through July 28 except for the week of July 4.

Farmers market to have live music, produce

BEAN BLOSSOM — From 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 17, the Bean Blossom farmers market, in the St. David’s Episcopal Church parking lot at state roads 45 and 135 North, will feature produce vendor “Uncle” Phil Wuench as vendor of the week.

Musician Dave Miller will play all genres of music; requests are welcome.

The outreach booth hosts Centerstone, a provider of mental health services.

Catholic church VBS carries surf theme

From 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday, June 20 to 24, St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1008 McLary Road, will host vacation Bible school for children age 4 through sixth grade.

Becks Grove church hosts VBS

BECKS GROVE — Becks Grove Christian Church, 8009 Becks Grove Road, will host vacation Bible school for children in pre-K through eighth grade Monday though Friday, June 20 to 24.

Dinner is available at 5:30 p.m. and VBS runs from 6 to 8:20 p.m. with crafts, recreation, music and Bible stories.

Farm offers children’s day camp with horses

BEAN BLOSSOM — Hope for Hearts Farm Inc., on State Road 45, will offer a Confident Kids Camp Tuesdays, June 21 and July 12 and 26. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., participants ages 8 to 12 can experience farm life, learn about horses and participate in non-riding activities, devotionals, games and crafts while building self-esteem.

Family history program features genealogist

CORDRY SWEETWATER — From 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, a free family history program will be offered at the Cordry-Sweetwater Branch of the Brown County Public Library, in the lot owners’ clubhouse, 8751 Nineveh Road.

Genealogist Kathy Evans will help participants work on a family tree or find out about ancestors.

Garage sale at fairgrounds to assist 4-H’ers

From 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 24, and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 25, the Brown County/Purdue Extension Homemakers Association will host a garage sale in the 4-H Exhibit Building on Memorial Drive at the fairgrounds.

Proceeds will go to the 4-H trip/camp fund.

Booth space is available for a $30 donation, and donated items to sell are welcome.

BCHS classes from 1960s to reunite this month

A reunion is planned Friday, June 24, for the 1964, 1965, 1966 and 1967 classes of Brown County High School. It will start at 6:30 p.m. at the Creekside Retreat Conference Center, 2450 State Road 46 East, and include hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.

Classmates and others associated with the classes are welcome.

Class series on native plant stewardship offered

A series about benefits of native plants and controlling non-native plants will be taught this summer at the Brown County Soil and Water Conservation District Office, 802 Memorial Drive at the fairgrounds.

Class will run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. every other Wednesday, June 29 through Aug. 24. Most will be indoors. The July 13 and Aug. 10 sessions will be at Deer Run Park.

Speakers will include Tommy Gunn, Chris Neggers and Ellen Jacquart, all of The Nature Conservancy; Jane Savage and Ruth Ann Ingraham of the Brown County Native Woodlands Project; Allison Rubeck of BCSWCD; Sam Shoaf and Matt Fox of Eco Logic; and Dan McGuckin of Habitat Solutions Wildlife and Forest Management.

Those who attend five of six sessions and pass a written, take-home exam will be certified as Native Plant Stewards and can become members of the Brown County Native Woodlands Project. Graduation will be Saturday, Sept. 10 at Nature Daze.

Firefighters plan Fourth of July hog roast

In conjunction with the Brown County Lions Club fireworks display, a hog roast will be served from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, July 4 at the Brown County (Nashville) Volunteer Fire Department, 231 E. Main St.

The meal, $8, includes a BBQ pulled-pork sandwich, baked beans, coleslaw, chips and drink.

Summer day camp offered at intermediate school

Brown County Parks and Recreation is offering summer day camp at Brown County Intermediate School, 260 Schoolhouse Lane, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, through Aug. 5, holidays excluded. Children entering preschool through the sixth grade are welcome.

Activities include swimming, bowling, movies, crafts, games and field trips.

Enrichment camps offered in lieu of YMCA day camp

The Brown County YMCA is offering half-day summer enrichment programs to students entering kindergarten through the 12th grade.

Programs are split up by age group and by interest. Offerings focus on sports, outdoor discovery, science, art, “fun financial foundations,” creative expression and “college application boot camp.”

The YMCA is also a Brown County Schools free summer lunch site, so campers can choose to come early or stay late to catch lunch at 11:30.

Children’s history program to be taught monthly

This summer and fall, the Brown County Historical Society will offer Hands on History to show children ages 8 to 12 what pioneer children would have experienced.

Topics include cooking, gardening, games, music and dance, quilting, weaving and spinning, weather lore and map reading.

Program dates are Thursdays, July 7, Sept. 22 and Oct. 20, and Saturday, Aug. 20. All are from 1 to 4 p.m. at the History Center and Pioneer Village, 90 E. Gould St.

HAMBLEN TWP. — Sprunica Baptist Church, 3902 Sprunica Road, will serve a free community breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, July 9.

Served the second Saturday of each month, the menu includes biscuits and gravy, rolls, eggs and more.

Preservation society to meet in July

The Peaceful Valley Heritage Preservation Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, in a lower-level meeting room of the Brown County Community Foundation, 209 N. Van Buren St.

All are welcome. The organization serves to recognize and preserve historic, cultural and natural resources of Brown County. Meetings are the second Tuesday of each month.

Free dental clinic to be offered in Nashville

Brown Countians for Quality Health Care are organizing a free dental clinic from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 16 at the Brown County YMCA on Willow Street in Nashville.

It will include screenings and referral where possible, cavity-protection fluoride treatments, tips on dental care, help with Medicaid and HIP 2.0 coverage, and free toothbrushes.

Fruitdale firefighters to serve fish fry

BEAN BLOSSOM — The Fruitdale Volunteer Fire Department will have its next fish fry and bazaar from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, July 16 at the station, 5200 State Road 135 North.

In addition to Alaskan pollock fish, volunteers serve “tenderloin sandwiches as big as your head,” desserts, baked beans, coleslaw and sweet tea. Donations are accepted to support the fire department.

A bazaar with vendors of various items will be set up at the station for diners to shop.

Four-state tour of cars, country music includes Bean Blossom

BEAN BLOSSOM — The Rev’n Rods & Heartland Music Tour’s six-day, six-city schedule includes Bean Blossom.

On Thursday, July 21, James Otto will perform at the Bill Monroe Memorial Music Park. The event includes a car show from noon to 6 p.m. and the concert at 6 p.m.

The car show is free; concert tickets for the Bean Blossom show cost $11.

Car owners can join the tour in any city and follow it to the final destination in Indianapolis. The tour includes:

VBS planned at Mennonite church

BEAN BLOSSOM — Vacation Bible school will be offered for children ages 4 to 11 at Bean Blossom Mennonite Church, 5046 State Road 135 North.

Read to dogs at the library

Children and adults are welcome to visit the Brown County Public Library, 205 N. Locust Lane, from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 24, for Sit, Stay, Read!

The program features three certified therapy dogs and good listeners, Mocha, Daisy June and George.

No registration is required for the drop-in program, underwritten by Friends of the Library and made possible in partnership with the Brown County Humane Society.
