Twenty-one Hoosier artists were awarded about $20,000 in prize money at the opening of the Indiana Heritage Arts Exhibition and Sale show June 10 at the Brown County Art Gallery.

The free, monthlong show, now in its 38th year, features 126 works by 71 juried artists. All works are for sale.

C.W. Mundy of Indianapolis, an internationally recognized plein air painter, won the gold prize of $5,000 for his oil painting of the “Old Fisherman” (pictured).

A high school art teacher from Bloomfield, Wyatt Le Grand, won the silver prize of $3,000 with an oil titled “Sheep.”

Kathy Blankenheim of Brownsburg, a frequent entrant in the show, won the bronze prize and $2,000 for a painting titled “Skywalker.”

The IHA exhibition, open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the gallery, 1 Artist Drive, honors today’s artists painting in the tradition of the early Brown County artist colony begun in the late 1800s by T.C. Steele.

Several well-known Brown County artists’ work also is included in the show: Paticia Rhoden Bartels, Tim Greatbatch, Bruce Gray, Norene Mara and Thom Robinson.

“It is an honor for IHA to recognize outstanding artists with ties to Indiana,” said longtime show chairman Jim Ross, owner of Ross-Eckert Gallery of Indiananpolis. “Our goal is to keep alive and encourage artists who are following the outstanding heritage of our early artists.”

Judging this year’s show was Anne Blair Brown of Nashville, Tennessee, a nationally known American impressionist and plein air painter.

IHA purchased an oil by Bloomington painter Mark Ratzlaff titled “Bloomington Dairy02,” a downtown street scene.

The all-volunteer nonprofit organization maintains a permanent gallery and sales space inside the Brown County Art Gallery.
