Nashville noted as prime small-town destination

For those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of big cities, 91 small towns in Indiana offer just that — and Nashville is one of them.

In Jessica Nunemaker’s new book “Little Indiana: Small Town Destinations,” Nashville is one of the featured towns with populations of 15,000 or less. It was published at the end of April.

Traveling all over Indiana for six years, Nunemaker visited each small town in her book. Her book features the best places to eat, play, shop, sleep and stay. The book is organized by region and town.

Citing Nashville’s historic art colony, Nunemaker labels Nashville as the “preferred locale for creative types.”

She encourages visitors to stay at the Abe Martin Lodge in the Brown County State Park and the Overlook Lodge at Salt Creek Golf Retreat.

“Play” locations include the 1879 log jail, panning for gems at the Cooperhead Creek Gem Mining or feeding alpacas at Whispering Pines Alpaca Farm.

Big Woods Pizza Company, the Candy Dish, the Daily Grind Coffee Shop, Hobnob Restaurant and Out of the Ordinary are just a few of the restaurants Nunemaker notes for visitors.

Let’s not forget about shopping.

The handmade outfits and hats for your dogs at It’s All About Dogs, the all-natural soaps and lotions at Johanna Lee Bathology, knitting and crocheting supplies at the Clay Purl, socks at For Bare Feet, toys at the Toy Chest and clothing for women of all sizes at the Mulberry Cottage are just some of the items Nunemaker notes about shopping in Nashville.

Nunemaker is also a blogger and is the host of the Little Indiana segment on “The Weekly Special” on PBS. She began her website, littleindiana.com in 2009.

“Little Indiana: Small Town Destinations” also features Bean Blossom — including the Bean Blossom Covered Bridge, the Bill Monroe Bluegrass Hall of Fame and Country Star Museum and Plum Creek Antiques.

Copies of the book can be ordered at iupress.indiana.edu by searching for the title. The book is $23 for paperback and is $22.99 as an e-book.
