After spending some time on both the East and West coasts, Indiana native and author Kim Wise is back in the Midwest and is now calling Brown County home.
Wise has written the first book in her “Territories” trilogy. The paranormal, romantic novel titled “Territories: Crossing the Line” follows the journey of Emma, a woman who receives a mysterious jewel that gives her supernatural powers.
After receiving her powers, Emma doesn’t know whom to trust. People want her dead because of what is in her possession. She teams up with a wolf, who has his own agenda and who Emma begins to fall for.
The science fiction, romance novel was inspired by a drive Wise — who loves to read sci-fi and romance novels — and her family took during winter to Mammoth Mountain for ski season.
“The scenery was beautiful as we drove through the national forest and the small towns. I just started imagining the story taking place in this area so I began doing research. Each time I drove through Bishop (town near Mammoth Mountain), I would stop at a different place to get the feel of the town and the area,” Wise said.
Q: Have you written any other books?
“Crossing the Line” is the first book in the Territories trilogy. I’m currently revising the second book, “Beyond Boundaries.”
Q: What’s your day job?
I’m a co-founder and channel sales representative for a financial services tech firm called InvestCloud.
Q: What are your connections to Brown County?
I’ve been coming to Brown County as a tourist since I was a kid. My friends and family would come here for shopping or to visit the state park. I grew up in New Castle, Indiana, and went to Indiana University. I was also a NFL cheerleader for the Indianapolis Colts before moving to New York, where I met my British husband. We relocated to Los Angeles, California, but came to Brown County every year for Thanksgiving. We’d rent a log cabin with my whole family — 14 of us. We loved it so much that we purchased a home last year, so now we are residents.
Q: What’s your writing ritual? In what environment do you work best?
I try to write at least 30 minutes every day during the week, and about two to three hours a day on the weekends. The first thing I do is re-read my outline and then I read the last chapter I was working on, in order to put myself back into the flow of the story. I have several writing “spaces” around my house — an office, a small table next to our living room window, a bistro table on our balcony and I also get a lot of writing done on airplanes. I put on my headset and tune out everything around me.
Q: What the last book you read?
“Feverborn” by Karen Marie Moning. Her “Fever” series is one of my favorite reads.

Q: Do you have any book signings or related events planned?
I’m focused on revising the second installment “Territories: Beyond Boundaries” over the next couple of months, so I am planning book signings and launch parties toward the end of the summer.
