BEAN BLOSSOM — Vacation Bible school is offered for children ages 4 to 11 at Bean Blossom Mennonite Church, 5046 State Road 135 North.

Bean Blossom included in music, car tour
BEAN BLOSSOM — The Rev’n Rods and Heartland Music Tour’s six-day, six-city schedule includes Bean Blossom.
On Thursday, July 21, James Otto will perform at the Bill Monroe Memorial Music Park. The event includes a car show from noon to 6 p.m. and the concert at 6 p.m.
The car show is free; concert tickets for the Bean Blossom show cost $11.
Car owners can join the tour in any city and follow it to the final destination in Indianapolis. The tour includes:

Farmers market features homemade products
BEAN BLOSSOM — From 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 22, the Bean Blossom farmers market, in the St. David’s Episcopal Church parking lot, will feature vendor of the week Elizabeth LeBlanc, offering scented soaps, body scrubs, lotions and more.
Don Ford will play acoustic rock ‘n roll. He also accepts requests.
The outreach booth will feature Brown County Habitat for Humanity, which builds and repairs homes for people in need.

Having a ruff day? Read to dogs at library
Children and adults are welcome to visit the Brown County Public Library, 205 N. Locust Lane, from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 24, for Sit, Stay, Read!
The program features three certified therapy dogs and good listeners, Mocha, Daisy June and George.
No registration is required for the drop-in program, underwritten by Friends of the Library and made possible in partnership with the Brown County Humane Society.

Brown County 4-H Fair schedule set
Brown County 4-H Fair week will run from Sunday, July 31 through Saturday, Aug. 6 at the 4-H fairgrounds.
Leading up to fair week will be other contests, competitions, shows and other events, such as the cat show at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 24; rabbit showmanship at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 26; dog show at 7 p.m. Friday, July 29 and 8 a.m. Saturday, July 30; the 4-H Color-Me-Green-Walk/Run at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 30; and the Bulls and Barrels Rodeo at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 30.
The fair officially kicks off with a vesper service by community churches from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 31. The queen contest starts at 8 p.m.
Grandstand events, all at 7 p.m., include Hillbilly Ninja Warrior Monday, Demolition Derby Tuesday, Farm Tractor/Truck Pull Wednesday, Motocross-AMX and 4-Wheel ATV races Thursday, Hoosier Pro Wrestling Friday, and the Mud Bog Race Saturday.

Free bags of food for backpack students
Brown County Weekend Backpacks is providing a bag of food for the weekend to students who have been on the free lunch program during the school year.
Parents may come by the Food Services Building (across Schoolhouse Lane from the junior high) on Thursdays between 4 and 6 p.m. and pick up a bag of food for students.
The program will run through July 28.
Chamber seeks beautification award nominees
The Brown County Chamber of Commerce, Brown County Garden Club and Keep Brown County Beautiful will recognize two Brown County businesses for their building design, signage, landscape design and flowers.
Any business in Brown County can be nominated; they do not need to be members of the Brown County Chamber of Commerce. Nominations can be submitted at thebrowncountychamber.org; the deadline is Aug. 31.
Building design should be appropriate for the adjacent neighborhood, suitably placed on the site and well maintained.
The overall design of signs should be consistent in style and lettering.
The landscape should be healthy and appropriately scaled for the building. Creative use of flowers, hanging pots and potted plants will be considered.
The area must be clean and litter free with trash containers available.
Awards will be presented at the Brown County Chamber of Commerce annual meeting in January.
Thrive Alliance offers lunch, senior travel opportunities
For people 55 and older, Thrive Alliance will offer a free lunch at the Brown County YMCA, 105 Willow St., at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 27, followed by a travel presentation by Edie Smith from Mill Race Center in Columbus.
Travel opportunities for 2017 include day trips, overnights and extended trips to various U.S. locations, other countries and a Caribbean cruise. A portion of all proceeds benefits the local YMCA.

Guitar festival to feature world-class talent
Fingerstyle guitarists will converge in Brown County for the fifth annual Indiana Fingerstyle Guitar Festival Friday, July 29. Forty players from the United States and Europe will compete at the Brown County Playhouse, 70 S. Van Buren St., all day Saturday, July 30.
Fingerstyle guitar is playing by plucking the strings directly with fingertips, fingernails or picks attached to the right hand fingers. Prominent players include Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, Tommy Emmanuel and Andres Segovia.
Former festival winner Kade Puckett will perform at the Pine Room Tavern, 51 E. Chestnut St., at 6 p.m. Friday, July 29.
A party is planned at Brown County Inn, 51 State Road 46 East, from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, with Cari Ray and the Loaners, 12 nationally-ranked guitarists and previous winners of the competition.
Competition will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 30, at the Playhouse and the top three will be announced at 4 p.m. Doors open at 9:30 a.m.
A 7:30 p.m. concert will feature the top three players, the announcement of the winner, and performances from Tim and Miles Thompson, Michael Kelsey and Puckett.

Dogs can swim at YMCA pool next month
From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, the Brown County YMCA pool, 105 Willow St., will be open for swimming to well-behaved dogs with current vaccinations, one dog per person.
A second date is set for the same hours Tuesday, Sept. 6, at the Brown County State Park pool, off State Road 46 East. The park gate fee applies.
Dogs must be leashed when not in the pool and have current vaccine documentation.
To register for one day, bring a bag of Purina Dog food plus $20 per dog for the Brown County Humane Society (without food, bring $25 for on-site registration). To register for both days, $30 plus a bag of Purina Dog food can be brought to the Y.

Vendors sought for BucCornEar fundraiser
HELMSBURG — Jackson Township firefighters have planned the fifth annual BucCornEar Festival at the fire station, 4831 Helmsburg Road, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24.
Vendor applications are available by contacting the fire department at 812-988-6201, [email protected], facebook.com/buccornear, or at the fire station.
Applications received after Saturday, Sept. 10, will be charged a $10 late fee. Bring completed applications to the fire station or send them, with checks payable to Jackson Township Fire Department, to BucCornEar Festival, c/o Jackson Township Fire Dept., P.O. Box 610, Nashville, IN 47448.
Admission is free. The event includes food and games for a donation, a pirate village and gauntlet, bucket brigade, pirate costume contest, walk-the-plank, plink-o, ring toss, pirate hook fishing, corn shucking, popcorn, a car show, a burning house fire demo, and a live line safety demo by SCI-REMC.
Pioneer Women’s Club sets quilt show date
The Brown County Historical Society Quilt Show, presented by the Pioneer Women’s Club, will be Friday through Sunday, Sept. 16 to 18. It will feature more than 100 quilts at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St. Show hours will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and until 3 p.m. Sunday.

To see the show, admission is $6 per person, children 10 and younger admitted free. A cafe, live music by local artists and demonstrations in weaving, spinning and hand quilting will be provided.
Other features include quilting supply vendors, scissor/knife sharpening and a gift shop. Chances to win a club-created raffle quilt are $1 each. The drawing will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18.
Preservation society to meet next month
The Peaceful Valley Heritage Preservation Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, in a lower-level meeting room of the Brown County Community Foundation, 209 N. Van Buren St.
All are welcome. The organization serves to recognize and preserve historic, cultural and natural resources of Brown County. Meetings are the second Tuesday of each month.

Children’s history program to be taught Aug. 20
This summer and fall, the Brown County Historical Society is offering Hands on History to show children ages 8 to 12 what pioneer children would have experienced.
Topics include cooking, gardening, games, music and dance, quilting, weaving and spinning, weather lore and map reading.
Remaining program dates are Thursdays, Sept. 22 and Oct. 20, and Saturday, Aug. 20. All are from 1 to 4 p.m. at the History Center and Pioneer Village, 90 E. Gould St.

Fruitdale firefighters conducting fish fry
BEAN BLOSSOM — The Fruitdale Volunteer Fire Department will have its next fish fry and bazaar from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27 at the station, 5200 State Road 135 North.
In addition to Alaskan pollock fish, volunteers serve “tenderloin sandwiches as big as your head,” desserts, baked beans, coleslaw and sweet tea. Donations are accepted to support the fire department.
A bazaar with vendors of various items will be set up at the station for diners to shop.
Music, arts festival, peace rally being planned
A music and art festival is planned for Friday through Sunday, Sept. 2 to 4, for those who are concerned “about the direction the country is headed.” All music in the spirit of peace is welcome. Booth rentals for the arts will be available.
