One candidate so far on school board ballot

Brown County residents wishing to be candidates for school board have until noon Aug. 26 to get paperwork submitted to the Brown County clerk’s office.

Two seats are up for election in November, both at-large seats.

Current board member Stephanie Kritzer is the only candidate who has met the qualifications to appear on the ballot so far.

School board candidates are required to get 10 signatures on a petition for nomination and consent. Brown County Clerk Brenda Woods said her office asks for a few additional signatures in case a signature or two are invalid.

Candidates must also file a statement of economic interest. It is available online, along with the petition of nomination and consent, at in.gov/sos/elections.

Candidates must be at least 21 and must have lived in the school district for at least one year before the election. They cannot hold more than one “lucrative office” at a time, as defined by state law.

Anyone who works for the school district — as a teacher or as a non-certified staff member — is not eligible to run; neither is any person who has been convicted of a felony, according to the the Indiana School Boards Association.

Note: This story has been corrected to show which seats are up for election. They both are at-large, not representing specific districts.
