New coordinator to bring public, arts organizations together

The local arts and entertainment scene is getting some help with publicity.

The Nashville Town Council has approved hiring Linda Margison as a part-time media coordinator to work with the town’s arts and entertainment commission.

Not only town artists and events will benefit, though.

Margison will work with the Brown County Convention and Visitors Bureau, town and county officials and “stakeholders” such as artists and entertainers to further promote the Arts Village Brown County brand, her job description says.

She attended her first full arts commission meeting last week to start getting a more specific idea of how she can help.

A vibrant arts scene benefits the entire community, Margison said. One of her jobs will be to get more participants — locals and visitors — to come out for all the activities around the county related to arts of all kinds, including live music.

Margison, a former editor of the Brown County Democrat, will use print media and social media to put art opportunities in front of potential audiences as often as possible.

There’s already an Arts Village Brown County Facebook page and an inactive Twitter account; she plans to revive those.

Margison is contracted until the end of the year. She’s being paid $500 per month, plus expenses, out of the town’s economic development income tax funds and arts and entertainment budget.

Town Manager/Economic Development Director Scott Rudd said the work the coordinator will do also can positively affect other tax revenue: food and beverage tax. That 1-percent tax on all food and beverage sales in Nashville funds sidewalk and streetscape improvements and parking and public restroom facilities.
