A Brown County man has been charged with two counts each of attempted murder and aggravated battery after police say he shot his estranged girlfriend and another woman on Lucas Hollow Road Aug. 23.

Joshua Asher, 30, Nashville, was also charged with a fifth felony, torturing or mutilating a vertebrate animal, related to a dog that was shot in the leg.

He also faces two misdemeanors, domestic battery and invasion of privacy.

According to a probable cause affidavit from Brown County Sheriff Scott Southerland, Asher shot his estranged girlfriend, Angel Mack, in her right thigh and foot. The two were identified as tenants of the residence where the incident took place.

Nicole Hillen, a friend of Mack’s, had a surface gunshot wound to the chest, Southerland said.

Both women were transported to area hospitals and reported in stable condition that night by the sheriff’s office.

Asher told officers that he believed Mack was seeing another man.

He said he went to the home on Lucas Hollow Road and hid by the creek across the drive.

When he saw Mack and Hillen pull up in a van, he said he fired one shot to “let them know he was there,” then continued to fire as he came toward them.

Asher said he did not stop until he ran out of bullets.

He said he did not intend to hurt Mack.

Hillen told police that Asher said, “You’re going to die,” before pointing the gun at her chest and firing. He then continued past her, firing at Mack, who was at the front door of the house.

Mack told police that Asher also told her she was was going to die, saying, “I’m done,” once the gun was empty.

Landlord and neighbor Dale Reed told police he heard gunshots, then saw Asher walking down Lucas Hollow. Reed said Asher walked up, hugged him and handed him a 9mm handgun.

The affidavit said Lt. Mike Moore saw a box at the scene that matched the handgun Asher gave to Reed.

Asher told Reed he intended to walk down the road and give up, according to the affidavit.

Another resident of Lucas Hollow told officers he heard gunshots and later saw Asher walking away from the house. Asher told him he had shot two people, the report said.

When officers reached Asher, he kneeled and put his hands on his head.

Asher could face between 20 and 116 years in prison and up to $60,000 in fines for all seven charges.

During a hearing Aug. 24, Asher told Brown Circuit Court Magistrate Frank Nardi that he had between $5,000 and $7,000 in total assets. He requested a court-appointed attorney and was assigned Jacob Moore.

He is being held in the Brown County jail on $2 million bond. His next court appearance will be Oct. 26.
