Photo and glass show hanging at local gallery
B3 Gallery, 61 W. Main St., is hosting an art show, Photography and Glass by Anne Ryan Miller, from Thursday, Sept. 8 through Tuesday, Oct. 4.
A reception with music by the Bloomington Classical Guitar Society and Ginnvor Bullard will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 10 during the Second Saturday Village Art Walk.
A 30-year-plus resident of Brown County, Miller creates stained glass pieces using traditional copper foil wrapping and a unique metal overlay, which allows her to create detailed, dimensional nature scenes.
“If my work can remind any one person to love, respect and cherish our home planet, then I believe I have done my job,” she said.
Miller pioneered her metal overlay technique in 1980. She is one of a handful of artists who work with the process. Her glass show at B3 will feature her Women in Nature series.

Art Alliance monthly PARTake classes set
Art Alliance Brown County will host two PARTake art classes in September at Chateau Thomas Winery in Nashville.
“Fun With Abstracts” with Anabel Hopkins will be Saturday, Sept. 10 and “Fun With Florals” with M.K. Watkins will be Saturday, Sept. 24. Both classes, from 3 to 5 p.m., will work in acrylics.
With abstracts, the painter is communicating an idea rather than depicting an object, Hopkins said. Abstract is a person’s interpretation of how he or she sees things.
Hopkins was awarded an Arts in the Parks grant from the Indiana Arts Commission and Department of Natural Resources. This year, she’s been painting landscapes in Brown County State Park and at Lake Monroe. She has led workshops for senior citizens and middle school youth at the park.
Watkins is a self-taught muralist. Her most recent murals are in Anderson, at Anderson High School and the First Presbyterian Church. She is a teaching artist at the Madison County Detention Center and a volunteer at the Anderson Center for the Arts.
PARTake classes are informal and designed for beginners. Everyone ends up with their own masterpiece to take home.
The cost is $35 for Art Alliance members and $40 for non-members, and includes a glass of wine, al materials, light refreshments and individual instruction. PARTake classes will run through November.

Second Saturday Art Walk scheduled in September
From 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday Sept. 10, the Village Art Walk will take place in downtown Nashville. The free tour features nine galleries that will stay open until 8 p.m., offering refreshments, music and a program. Each features original, handmade local and regional art and fine crafts.

Outdoor painting contest planned downtown
The Brown County Art Guild will host the second annual Nashville Villagescape Plein Air Paint Out Sunday, Sept. 11.
The entry fee is $15 per guild member or $20 per non-member.
Breakfast with the artists is from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Artists Colony Inn. Admission is $10, or free for artists participating in the paint-out.
Artists can paint from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The closing reception and awards ceremony will be at the Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren., from 4 to 5 p.m.

Grant period open for public art program
Artists wishing to create and engage the public in art projects at Indiana state parks and historical sites can apply for the Indiana Arts in the Parks and Historic Sites grant program. It offers up to $3,000 for such projects.
The application deadline for individuals is 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13.

Art class offered for beginning oil painting
From 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, artist John Barrett will teach oil painting step by step at the Brown County YMCA, 72 Willow St.
For $45 per person, all supplies are included for students to create a lakeview sunset.

Free music series continues at Village Green
The free Pavilion Summer Music Series will take place from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Saturdays, Sept. 17 and Oct. 8.
Concerts are played at the Village Green pavilion at Jefferson and Main streets in downtown Nashville. Guests are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets.
The featured musician Sept. 17 is Jeff Foster, fingerstyle guitar, and on Oct. 8, Cari Ray & The Loners, Americana.

Artist sought to paint governor’s portrait
INDIANAPOLIS — The state is accepting applications from Hoosier artists to paint the official portrait of Governor Mike Pence. The Indiana State Museum will coordinate the selection process; the portrait must be 42 by 32 inches in oil or acrylic.
The deadline to apply is 4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23. Applicants must:
• Be a resident or native of Indiana or a graduate of an Indiana institution of higher learning. Preference will be given to Indiana residents.
• Complete the application form, available at indianamuseum.org/governorportrait.
• Include a resume detailing portrait experience and commissions, list of their work in public collections, past exhibitions and art training.
• Include a statement about their approach to portrait painting.
• Submit six to 10 digital color samples of their portrait work.
• Propose the required dollar amount for the commission, including framing.
The artist will be named by the end of October. The painting will be completed by the end of June 2017.
Artists’ work from grant to be shown at state park
From 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, Arts in the Parks grant winners Patricia Rhoden Bartels and Anabel Hopkins will display work on the porch of Brown County State Park’s Abe Martin Lodge.
Thir paintings have been created at the park and at Lake Monroe during the past few months as part of the public art grant program.
Seasons holiday art and craft show planned
The Seasons Conference Center will host a holiday art and craft show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26.
Free to the public, the event is a juried fine art and craft show that includes about 40 booths. Prizes will be awarded to artists for best 2D work, 3D work and a vote for a People’s Choice Award. A light breakfast or lunch can be purchased.
