The blessing, presented by St. David’s Episcopal Church and Wheels of Faith, will happen across State Road 45 from St. David’s, in the former Shopworth IGA parking lot.

HAMBLEN TWP. — Sprunica Baptist Church, 3902 Sprunica Road, will serve a free community breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10.

Served the second Saturday of each month, the menu includes biscuits and gravy, rolls, eggs and more.

Learn more about nature, land conservation

Landowners can learn about managing their property to create a resilient, native habitat during Nature Daze, a free series of workshops Saturday, Sept. 10. Programs will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at CYO Camp Rancho Framasa, 2230 Clay Lick Road.

In addition to many speakers and a field trip, the day includes children’s activities, a native plant sale, door prizes and a barbecue lunch.

Historic site to host activities for artist’s birthday

BELMONT — From 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, T.C. Steele State Historic Site, 4220 T.C. Steele Road, will honor Steele’s birthday with an art contest.

During the 28th annual Great Outdoor Art Contest, visitors can watch artists of all ages and skill levels paint “en plein air” outside from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Awards will be announced at 3:15 p.m.

From 1:30 to 3:15 p.m., Celtica, a Celtic band, will perform.

Lunch by Ralph and Ava’s Catering, Brown County Kettle Corn and BarisGo Coffee will be sold from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Grand Junction Brewing Co. of Westfield will serve beer. Parking is $3.

Artists and visitors can see the latest painting rotation of Steele’s work in the Large Studio. The work of judges Donna Shortt, Mary Ann Davis and Rick Wilson will also be on display.

Painters can work in oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media and drawing.

Preservation society to meet in September

The Peaceful Valley Heritage Preservation Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, in a lower-level meeting room of the Brown County Community Foundation, 209 N. Van Buren St.

All are welcome. The organization serves to recognize and preserve historic, cultural and natural resources of Brown County. Meetings are the second Tuesday of each month.

Volunteers sought to read to tots once a month

Brown County Purdue Extension is looking for volunteers to read once a month to area preschoolers.

Volunteers will go to pre-K classrooms, daycares and other locations to read from October through April. Books will be given to all children.

Teachers and caregivers can register classrooms for the program.

Volunteers need to turn in application forms by Friday, Sept. 16.

Pioneer Women’s Club sets quilt show date

The Brown County Historical Society Quilt Show, presented by the Pioneer Women’s Club, will be Friday through Sunday, Sept. 16 to 18.

It will feature more than 100 quilts at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St. Hours will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and until 3 p.m. Sunday.

Admission is $6 per person; children 10 and younger are admitted free. A cafe, music and demonstrations in weaving, spinning and hand quilting will be provided.

Other features include quilting supply vendors, scissor/knife sharpening and a gift shop. Chances to win a club-created raffle quilt are $1 each.

Self-care acupressure taught at library

Certified practitioner Gloria Lawson will teach acupressure points from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20 in a lower-level meeting room of the Brown County Public Library.

Children’s history programs taught monthly

The Brown County Historical Society offers Hands on History to show children ages 8 to 12 what pioneer children would have experienced. Topics include cooking, gardening, games, music and dance, quilting, weaving and spinning, weather lore and map reading.

Vendors sought for BucCornEar fundraiser

HELMSBURG — Jackson Township firefighters have planned the fifth annual BucCornEar Festival at the fire station, 4831 Helmsburg Road, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24.

Admission is free. Fruitdale firefighters conducting fish fry

BEAN BLOSSOM — The Fruitdale Volunteer Fire Department will have its next fish fry and bazaar from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 at the station, 5200 State Road 135 North.

In addition to Alaskan pollock fish, volunteers serve “tenderloin sandwiches as big as your head,” desserts, baked beans, coleslaw and sweet tea. Donations are accepted to support the fire department.

A bazaar with vendors of various items will be set up at the station for diners to shop.

New literacy festival offers family activities

Parents, children and caregivers are invited to the Fantastically Fabulous Family Fall Fling, a celebration of Brown County’s littlest readers, Sunday, Sept. 25 at the Brown County Public Library.

The event downstairs and in the parking lot from noon to 3 p.m. will include games, treats, storytellers and sing-alongs; books will be available for a donation.

The event is sponsored by the Brown County Literacy Coalition, Brown County Public Library and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
