Cooper Williams
Cooper Williams, 14, of Indianapolis, grandson of Cheri Clevenger of Nashville, has achieved Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Boy Scouts.
As a member of Boy Scout Troop 137, Williams has held several leadership positions including patrol leader, assistant patrol leader and senior patrol leader. He is also a member of the Order of the Arrow and this summer earned his Firecrafter. He also participated in White Stag, a weeklong national youth leadership training.
For his Eagle project, Williams assembled 150 care packages for Meet Me Under the Bridge, a ministry that serves the homeless community downtown Indianapolis. A meal also was served to the homeless community.
Clevenger said Williams sends his thanks to the local businesses who contributed to the silent auction to raise money for his project: Brown County Winery, Cornerstone Inn, eXplore Brown County, Yesteryear Old Time Photos, 1875 Homestead B&B and several antique dealers from Brown County Antique Mall.
Williams is a freshman at Warren Central High School. He is the son of Brent and Charis Williams.
Teacher attends Holocaust history seminar
Brown County Junior High School teacher Amy Oliver was one of 183 educators who attended the Arthur and Rochelle Belfer National Conference for Educators, a three-day workshop hosted by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in July.
Participants teamed up with museum educators and scholars in sharing rationales, strategies and approaches for teaching about the Holocaust, Nazi propaganda and anti-Semitism. Teachers toured the museum’s permanent exhibition and special exhibitions like “Some Were Neighbors: Collaboration & Complicity in the Holocaust.”
Participants also heard from Agi Geva and Henry Greenbaum, two Holocaust survivors.
Ivy Tech names dean’s list for summer semester
COLUMBUS — More than 200 students were named to the dean’s list for the summer 2016 semester at Ivy Tech Community College Columbus/Southeast, including Shaney Smith and Russell Roark, both of Freetown; Ayla Briles of Morgantown; and Britney McBurnett of Nineveh.
Dean’s list recipients must earn at least a 3.5 grade-point average.
Jenny Law, Levi Law
Jenny Law and son Levi Law of Hornettown Road both won state championships in the Indiana Barrel Racing Association Aug. 20 at Cloverdale arena C Bar C.
Jenny won three “top dog” awards, which go to the top five finishers in any division. She won first place, winning her first saddle, according to Sheryl Priddy. She and her horse “Fuel the Storm” also won several other awards.
Levi, age 7, won the peewee championship, also earning his first saddle. He has been riding for several years, starting with a mini horse until he moved up to “Flavor” last year, Priddy said.
Jenny manages Priddy Ranch Stables in northern Brown County.
