Eagles left out of running for state finals

While they weren’t able to claim a spot in this weekend’s state finals, Brown County junior Wyatt Wyman and senior Job Lawson finished their cross-country seasons on a high note.

At Saturday’s semistate hosted at Eagle Park, Wyman finished 21st overall in 16:27 while Lawson timed 17:04 for 70th.

The field proved cut-throat, with the top-10 individuals advancing to state without teams all finishing within the top-12 overall placings.

“They ran pretty close to where they’ve been in the past,” Brown County coach Rob Abraham said. “I thought, going in, that if Wyatt could have gotten in the top-20 we would have been sitting pretty good. It was just one of those crazy years.”

Skylar Stidam of Christian Academy won the race in 15:29, Evansville Reitz’s Matthew Schadler claimed second in 5:30 and Edgewood’s Austin Haskett placed third in 15:49.

In team scoring, Terre Haute South scored 78 points for first, Tell City was second at 87 and Columbus North got third totaling 127.

Other advancing squads included Jennings County (173), Bloomington North (178) and Barr-Reeve (191).

For Jennings County and Barr-Reeve, it’s the first time either program has advanced to state as a team.

While the area got pounded with rain the previous days, the course didn’t show it.

“The course held up pretty well for all the rain we got,” Abraham said. “We had about six inches of rain on Thursday on the course. We pumped off over a 100,000 gallons of water.”

Lawson will graduate from the Eagles’ program after joining the team for just one year.

“Job was a first year runner, and to make it to semistate individually is a pretty big step,” Abraham said. “It was really nice to see. I wish he ran the other three years beforehand, but you get what you get. It was a very fun year this year with the team. I can’t complain at all about the effort — they never complained once.”

On Saturday, the state championship meet will be held at LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute.
