Visit artist studios during free October tour
During October, visitors can take a self-guided driving tour of 14 studios and see 22 artisans at work on the Back Roads of Brown County Studio Tour.
Participating artists create paintings, rugs, pottery, jewelry, gourd art, books, metalwork, brooms, fiber art, calligraphy, woodworking, photography, stone carving and baskets. Visitors can meet and talk with the artists and craftsmen, watch them work and buy their wares.
The studio and home of T.C. Steele, one of Brown County’s first artists, is included on the tour.
A free map and guide is available at browncountystudiotour.com and at the Brown County Visitors Center downtown. Participating studios have signs. No reservations are required. Studios are generally open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily in October with a few exceptions, noted on the map.
Pancake breakfast served at junior high school
From 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, Chris Cakes Inc. will serve a pancake breakfast at the Brown County Junior High School cafeteria, 95 Schoolhouse Lane.
The breakfast costs $7 per person or $20 per family (parent and dependent children).
All proceeds go to junior high student activities. Donations are welcome.
Van Buren firefighters serve tenderloins
STONE HEAD — From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 29 and 30, the Van Buren Volunteer Fire Department, 4040 State Road 135 South, will serve tenderloin sandwiches with chips and tea, water or lemonade for $7. Cider slushies cost $2. Soda and chips are 50 cents each. Desserts cost $1 each; pumpkin and zucchini breads are $7 per loaf.
Candy, volunteers needed for trick-or-treat trail
The Brown County YMCA will partner with Brown County Parks and Recreation for Trick-or-Treat on the Trail from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31. Costumed volunteers are needed to create themed stations along the trail, handing out treats. Volunteers can sign up at the Y.
Candy or cash donations are requested. Take or send them to the YMCA, 105 Willow St., or the parks and rec office, 1001 Deer Run Lane, before Friday, Oct. 28. For more information, call 812-988-9622.
See live owls during pre-Halloween program
In cooperation with the Indiana Raptor Center, the Brown County Public Library will host a pre-Halloween owl program in a lower-level meeting room from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25.
Owls figure prominently in supernatural tales and culture, especially at Halloween. Learn how they really live and how their appetite for rodents saves in crop and property damage.
The free event is open to the public. Donations for the raptor center are welcome.
Backpack benefit cruise-in at Creekside planned
From 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, a benefit Cruise-In for Backpacks will take place at Creekside Retreat, 2450 State Road 46 East.
Proceeds will benefit the Brown County Weekend Backpacks Program to feed hungry children on weekends during the school year. Food and cash donations will be collected. The Brown County Shrine Club will have a food and beverage concession stand and entertainment will be provided.
Swap meet, flea market planned at fairgrounds
From 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, the Brown County Antique Machinery Association’s swap meet and flea market will take place at the Brown County 4-H Fairgrounds. Admission is free. For more information, visit bcama.net.
Shrine club hosts still board, trap shoot
Brown County Shrine Club will host its eighth annual still board and trap shoot from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 at Pittman Farm, 6088 State Road 46 East.

Library hosts discussion on health care costs
From 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, accredited asset management specialist Sarah Eder will answer questions and discuss “preparing for unexpected health care costs in retirement.”

Brown County Purdue Extension will host its annual meeting in the Exhibit Building at the Brown County 4-H Fairgrounds Thursday, Nov. 10, starting at 6 p.m.

Christmas bazaar planned at St. Agnes
St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1008 McLary Road, will host a Christmas bazaar from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, and until 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5.
Items for sale include crafts, Christmas items, decorated tabletop trees, jewelry, stamped paper creations and cards, local vendors, Brown County artists’ specialties, cookies and other homemade goodies.
The church will raffle a hand-stitched, king-sized quilt in the log cabin style, a barn-raising pattern.
Breakfast pastries and Brown County Coffee will be available in the mornings; hot tea from Sweetea’s of Nashville will be sold all day.

HELMSBURG — Brown County Community Church, 2370 Main St., will host its annual craft bazaar and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5.

Turkey shoot fundraiser for firefighters set
BEAN BLOSSOM — From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5 and 6, the Fruitdale Volunteer Fire Department will host its inaugural turkey shoot at the station, 5200 State Road 135 North.
Eligible guns are 12-, 20- and 16-gauge with a 32-inch barrel limit.
The cost is $3 per shot. Prizes include turkey, ham and bacon.

Preservation society to meet in Novembe
The Peaceful Valley Heritage Preservation Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, in a lower-level meeting room of the Howard F. Hughes Community Building, 209 N. Van Buren St.

A holiday bazaar will be set up at Parkview Church of the Nazarene from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12. The church is on State Road 46 East across from the north entrance to Brown County State Park.
Church bazaar, quilt raffle, bean dinner planned
HAMBLEN TWP. — Goshen Community Church, 2798 Gatesville Road, will host a holiday bazaar, quilt raffle and bean dinner from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12.

History Center bazaar spaces available

Tickets available for annual Chocolate Walk
Tickets for the ninth annual Chocolate Walk to benefit the Brown County Humane Society are on sale now.
The event, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, takes place throughout Nashville, with ticketholders collecting chocolate samples at more than 30 local shops and restaurants.
All proceeds benefit Brown County’s homeless pets. Tickets cost $20 through Oct. 31 and $25 from Nov. 1 until the event. Visit bchumane.org/chocolate-walk.
Live birds of prey, silent auction at fundraiser
The sixth annual Raptor Rendezvous will be at Abe Martin Lodge in Brown County State Park from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13.
Hosted by the Indiana Raptor Center, the event includes an afternoon snack buffet, cash bar, silent auction, program with live birds of prey, and a photo opportunity after the program. The program has been streamlined, the agenda rearranged, so the silent auction ends before the bird program starts, to allow people to leave as needed. Raptor Center birds to be shown this year are new additions. Wild Care, Utopia Wildlife Rehabilitators and Illinois Raptor Center will bring additional birds.

BCJHS Reality Store volunteers sought
Brown County Junior High has chosen Thursday, Dec. 1 for the annual Reality Store. Adult volunteers are needed to work with eighth-graders as they try to make a budget work for one month of living expenses.
Two sessions will be offered between 8:20 and 11:24 a.m. Volunteers should arrive earlier and are welcome to stay for a pizza lunch afterward.

MORGANTOWN — Saturday, Dec. 17, is Wreaths Across America Day, a designation begun in Arlington National Cemetery to honor veterans.
