Bishop to consecrate chapel garden, inter ashes

BEAN BLOSSOM — Bishop Catherine Waynick will consecrate a new chapel garden and inter ashes during a 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, service at St. David’s Episcopal Church.

The service, at the corner of state roads 45 and 135 North, is on All Saints’ Day. “Saint” in the New Testament means all members of the Christian community.

The garden is the culmination of years of planning to offer a final resting place for ashes of deceased members of the congregation. Five members to be interred are Bud and Fran Snyder, Gene and Mary Lou Russell, and Mary F. Carpenter.

The garden immediately south of the church is open to visitors. It includes an outdoor worship area for services and for individual reflection.

Brown County artists Ian Miller, Doug Miller and Jim Conner worked on the project.

Families can have ashes of loved ones scattered in the garden or interred beneath the altar in what is known as a columbarium, but which the church calls a “commonbarium” — where the cremains of the deceased are interred, separated in urns, but in a common resting place, as one body of Christ. Families also have the option of having cremains scattered through the center of the outdoor altar or scattered in the garden, said church member Gene Niednagel.

The church maintains records of all who are interred, including facts about the person’s life.

Library hosts discussion on health care costs

From 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, accredited asset management specialist Sarah Eder will answer questions and discuss “preparing for unexpected health care costs in retirement.”

The free event is open to the public at the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane. It is another in the library’s Social Security series.

Brown County Purdue Extension will host its annual meeting in the Exhibit Building at the Brown County 4-H Fairgrounds Thursday, Nov. 10, starting at 6 p.m.

Firefighters raising money with turkey shoot

BEAN BLOSSOM — From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5 and 6, the Fruitdale Volunteer Fire Department will host its inaugural turkey shoot at the station, 5200 State Road 135 North.

Eligible guns are 12-, 20- and 16-gauge with a 32-inch barrel limit.

The cost is $3 per shot. Prizes include turkey, ham and bacon.

Food will be sold and indoor restrooms will be available.

Gospel sing, food drive planned in Gnaw Bone

GNAW BONE — At 6 p.m. Saturday Nov. 5, Gnaw Bone Wesleyan Church, 4928 Old State Road 46, will host a gospel sing featuring the Gospel Heartstrings.

It will also be a food drive for the Nazarene Food Bank in Martinsville, in conjunction with Mt. Nebo Community Church, for support received after flood damage at the Brown County Holiness Camp.

Revival planned at Wesleyan church

Blood drive offered at Parkview Nazarene

From 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, Parkview Church of the Nazarene, 1750 State Road 46 East, will have an American Red Cross blood drive.

Meeting for BCCF scholarship seekers

Those seeking scholarships from the Brown County Community Foundation are urged to attend the annual scholarship information meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, in the Brown County High School auditorium, 235 Schoolhouse Lane.

Anyone planning to take classes in the fall of 2017 is welcome. More than $37,000 is available to be awarded. Scholarships are available for Brown County residents, current high school seniors, students currently enrolled in college, past graduates planning to enroll, and/or G.E.D. graduates. Tickets available for annual Chocolate Walk

Tickets for the ninth annual Chocolate Walk to benefit the Brown County Humane Society are on sale now.

The event, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, takes place throughout Nashville, with ticketholders collecting chocolate samples at more than 30 local shops and restaurants.

Live birds of prey, silent auction at fundraiser

The sixth annual Raptor Rendezvous will be at Abe Martin Lodge in Brown County State Park from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13.

Hosted by the Indiana Raptor Center, the event includes an afternoon snack buffet, cash bar, silent auction, program with live birds of prey, and a photo opportunity after the program. The program has been streamlined, the agenda rearranged, so the silent auction ends before the bird program starts, to allow people to leave as needed. Raptor Center birds to be shown this year are new additions. Wild Care, Utopia Wildlife Rehabilitators and Illinois Raptor Center will bring additional birds.

Bicentennial celebration at history center

At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St., will host a celebration of Indiana’s bicentennial. Sponsored by the historical society, Peaceful Valley Heritage Preservation and the League of Women Voters, the event features three speakers:

• Pam Raider, vice president of the League of Women Voters, will speak on “Wellness and Heritage in Brown County: a Vision 2020 Project.”
• Mark Dollase, vice president of preservation services for Indiana Landmarks, will speak about Brown County State Park on the National Register of Historic Places.
• Brown County commissioner Diana Biddle will speak about the Hoosier Hills Scenic Byway project.

BCJHS Reality Store volunteers sought

Brown County Junior High has chosen Thursday, Dec. 1 for the annual Reality Store. Adult volunteers are needed to work with eighth-graders as they try to make a budget work for one month of living expenses.

Two sessions will be offered between 8:20 and 11:24 a.m. Volunteers should arrive earlier and are welcome to stay for a pizza lunch afterward.

MORGANTOWN — Saturday, Dec. 17, is Wreaths Across America Day, a designation begun in Arlington National Cemetery to honor veterans.
