BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY — Firefighters from Bartholomew and Brown counties were called to extinguish a large brush and field fire west of Columbus.

The fire was reported early in the afternoon of Nov. 17 near where West Baker Hollow Road dead-ends near the Bartholomew County/Brown County line. It was under control by about 4 p.m., firefighters said. Most firefighters left the scene by 6 p.m.

Firefighters directed brush trucks and fire trucks to stage at the 14000 block of West Baker Hollow Road, near where the road dead-ends.

Clifford, Harrison Township, Wayne Township, Amity, Trafalgar and Brown County firefighters were putting out hots pots after the fire was brought under control.

The area involved is north of State Road 46, west of Columbus, on acreage between West Baker Hollow Road and Georgetown Road, firefighters said.

The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department had a helicopter circling the fire area, estimating it was about a half-mile of property from the east to the west, and about a quarter mile from the south to the north.

Sheriff deputies were on Georgetown Road telling residents about the fire, but no evacuations were ordered.
