The Brown County Commissioners and Brown County Council are accepting applications from local people willing to serve on various boards and commissions in 2017.

The Brown County Council has six posts to fill: One on the Alcoholic Beverage Board, two on the Brown County Regional Sewer District Board, one on the Property Tax Board of Appeals and two on the Brown County Redevelopment Commission.

The Brown County Commissioners have 13 seats to fill: One on the Alcoholic Beverage Board, two on the Brown County Convention and Visitors Commission, one on the Helmsburg Regional Sewer Board, one on the Brown County Parks and Recreation Board, one on the Gnaw Bone Regional Sewer Board, one on the Hamblen Fire District Board, two on PTABOA (with certain qualifications), one on the redevelopment commission and three on the Brown County Fire Protection District Merit Board.

Lengths of the terms vary from one to four years.

Even if someone is currently serving on a board and wishes to continue, if the term is up at the end of 2016, that person needs to reapply, said Brown County Auditor Beth Mulry.

The council and the commissioners will be making their choices separately. Mulry suggests that any applicant who doesn’t care which agency appoints them apply to both the council and the commissioners.

Applications to be considered by the county commissioners should go to the commissioners’ office on the second floor of the County Office Building on East Gould Street. The due date is Tuesday, Dec. 20, said Brown County commissioner Diana Biddle. She suggests applicants use a form that will be posted at browncounty-in.gov, but it is not required. If submitting a resume or letter instead, make sure contact information is included, she said.

Applications to be considered by the council should go to the auditor’s office on the first floor of the County Office Building. Letters of interest or resumes must be received by Monday, Dec. 19. Applicants will need to attend the county council meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17 at the County Office Building and may be asked to explain their qualifications and reasons why they wish to be appointed to that particular board.

Applicants to the commissioners will not be required to attend the board’s first meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 4, Biddle said. All selections might not be made at that meeting, she said.

The commissioners also still need to fill a vacancy on the Brown County Area Plan Commission, but Biddle said the application period for that seat has closed. That new member will serve until the end of 2017.

The Nashville Town Council had two seats to appoint to county-level boards for 2017, and at its October meeting, chose to keep the same people. Jim Hays will continue to serve on the Alcoholic Beverage Board and Lamond Martin will continue to represent the town on the Brown County Board of Zoning Appeals.

For town boards, the council made two new appointments Nov. 17: Michele Wedel to replace Suzannah Zody on the Nashville Arts and Entertainment Commission and Brandon Harris to fill an open seat on the Nashville Development Review Commission.

The council voted to retain all current members of the Nashville Tree Board, and Jane Gore and Dan Snow on the Nashville Redevelopment Commission.

One opening remains on the Nashville Arts and Entertainment Commission and one on the Nashville Redevelopment Commission. Council members planned to consider applicants at their Dec. 1 meeting; expression of interest forms can be found at townofnashville.org.
