YMCA considering starting babysitting co-op

The Brown County YMCA is gauging interest in starting a local babysitting co-op, in which parents would take turns watching each other’s children.

The YMCA has space to serve as the host site, said Shelle Hertz, program director.

End-of-life preparation series scheduled

The Brown County Community Foundation will host presentations this month on preparing for the end of life.

Three speakers, Karen Brock of Meredith-Clark Funeral Home, Matt Mulligan of Indiana Green Burial and Verne Sindlinger of St. David’s Episcopal Church will speak from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12 downstairs in the BCCF Community Room, 209 N. Van Buren St.

Church breakfast free to community

HAMBLEN TWP. — Sprunica Baptist Church, 3902 Sprunica Road, will serve a free community breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14.

Served the second Saturday of each month, the menu includes biscuits and gravy, rolls, eggs and more.

4-H SPARK clubs starting spring programming

Some Brown County 4-H SPARK clubs will start activities in January.

SPARK clubs are a 4-H program, but they are also open to children who are not already enrolled in the traditional 4-H summer program.

A baking club will meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14 at the Brown County Purdue Extension Office on Memorial Drive at the fairgrounds. It’s open to children in the third through 12th grades.

“Best Cooks in Brown County” will meet on Tuesdays Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28 and March 7 after school until 5 p.m. A Brown County Schools bus will provide transportation to the Extension office for fifth- through 12th-graders; participants in the third and fourth grades will need to be driven by their parents.

“Spring Acres of Adventure” will meet Mondays in February and March after school. Details have not been finalized yet.

“Best Babysitter” will teach ages 12 and older how to safely babysit younger children. It will be taught during spring break Tuesday, March 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Talk to a Lawyer Day planned at library

Short, confidential legal consultations will be available for free during Talk to a Lawyer Day in meeting room A at the Brown County Public Library. It lasts between 5 and 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16.

As a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr., local attorneys and legal aides will volunteer to help with legal questions on a first-come, first-served basis.

Food manager certification class offered

Beginning at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 17 and 18, a food manager certification class will be taught in the second-floor Salmon Room of the County Office Building, 201 N. Locust Lane. The Tuesday session will end at 12:30 p.m. and the Wednesday session will finish at 2:30 p.m.

All businesses serving food, except nonprofits, are required to have a certified food manager on staff. Certification is good nationwide for five years.

The class costs $125, which includes the ServSafe Sixth Edition Food Manager’s text and test. The book should be picked up at the health department to study in advance. Without text, the cost is $50. The health department accepts credit cards, money orders and cash.

Try different art forms during workshop

CORDRY SWEETWATER — From 1 to 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, the Cordry Sweetwater branch of the Brown County Public Library will host local artists who will introduce their crafts.

Ann Woods will demonstrate drawing and Martha Sechler, watercolors.

This is not an art class; participants won’t make a final product. But they will have an opportunity to try materials and receive a list of items needed to continue if they like it.

Tickets for annual chamber meeting available

Tickets are available for the Friday, Jan. 26 Brown County Chamber of Commerce annual members’ meeting at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St.

It will include a recap of 2016, a keynote speaker, buffet dinner, cash bar, door prizes and award presentations including the inaugural Brown County Beautification Award and Chamber Business of the Year. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Tavern hosts monthly spiritual discussions

At 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, The Pine Room, 51 East Chestnut St., will host Theology Pub, a discussion group supported by St. David’s Episcopal Church. It meets the first Thursday each month to wrestle with tough issues and current events.

The group is “spiritual, not religious,” an event flier says.

Public radio game show live at The Playhouse

At 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, the Brown County Playhouse, 70 S. Van Buren St., will host live tapings of public radio game show “Says You! The Hoosiers Have it!”

“Says You!” is a long-running, nationally broadcast show airing on WFIU Saturday mornings. Host Barry Nolan challenges two teams of panelists with interesting, difficult questions about words. Three definitions are given for a mystery word, only one of which is the actual meaning. Audience members try to determine who’s bluffing.

Tickets for the live show are $25.50 per student/child; $28.50 per adult; or $77.50 per person for WFIU VIP tickets, which include a pre-show cocktail reception at Out of the Ordinary restaurant with cast members of “Says You!” and premium seats at the performance.

Valentine’s prom for people with special needs

BLOOMINGTON — From 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, Portico Church at The Warehouse in Bloomington, 1525 S. Rogers St., will host Night to Shine, sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation. The event is a prom night experience centered on God’s love for people 14 and older with special needs.

Similar proms are set to take place in more than 350 churches in all 50 states and 10 countries.

Each guest of Night to Shine enters on a red carpet to the welcome of a friendly crowd and “paparazzi.” Guests can enter hair and makeup stations and shoe shining areas; get limousine rides, corsages and boutonnieres, a catered dinner and prom favors; and enjoy karaoke on the dance floor. Each guest is crowned king or queen of the prom.
