Registrations still accepted for Tabata boot camp

The Brown County YMCA has just begun a new session of Tabata boot camp, but registrations are still being accepted.

Tabata is a form of high-intensity interval training. Classes last for 45 minutes and are offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, either at 6 a.m. or 8 a.m. for eight weeks.

The program includes “adaptations and modifications for all levels and fitness abilities.” The aim is to improve energy and core stability quickly so participants become fitter, stronger and regain balance, the Y reports.

For returning participants, the cost is $175 per Y member or $200 per non-member. For new participants, the boot camp costs $225 per Y member or $250 per non-member.

Open gym times updated at local YMCA

The Brown County YMCA offers open gym for basketball, volleyball and pickleball for players 16 and older of all ability levels, with informal, friendly games.

Basketball is offered from 3 to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays for junior and senior high school students, and 5 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays for all ages.

Volleyball is offered from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays.

Pickleball is 6 to 8 a.m. Mondays through Fridays, 7 to 9 a.m. Saturdays, and 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The rock wall is open from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursdays for all ages.

Open gym hours are free for Y members and $3 per non-member.

Winter in the Woods weekend activities planned

The weekend of Jan. 13-15 will be filled with events designed to help visitors and locals unwind in a variety of ways.

Winter in the Woods weekend activities range from a winter hike or Frosty Trails 5-Mile Run, to a wellness retreat, to cocktail classes and wine tasting, to swing dance lessons. Visit winterinthewoods.com or call 812-988-7303 for more information.

  • Winter Bliss Retreat: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, Abe Martin Lodge in Brown County State Park with more than a dozen wellness workshops such as yoga, sound healing, relationship building, creative arts and play, $90 to $100.   • Breakfast with the Naturalists and hiker’s lunch buffet: 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Little Gem Restaurant in Abe Martin Lodge at the state park, menu prices apply.
  • Self-guided hikes: 9 a.m., 3.5 mile-hike starting at the Nature Center and 2.75-mile hike starting at the park’s recreation building, learn winter wildlife facts from DNR interpreters on both hikes, free.
  • Frosty Trails 5 Mile: 10:30 a.m., Lower Shelter in Brown County State Park, 5.2-mile trail run or walk, $25 with long-sleeved shirt and post-race food and beverages. Information: intimeco.com/frostytrails or 317-340-7506.
  • Salt Creek Stroll: 2 p.m. Saturday or Sunday, Jan. 14 or 15, $10, sample a few wines at Salt Creek Winery before taking a 2-mile stroll along Salt Creek Trail and have a glass of your favorite upon return.
  • Deep Forest De-Stress: Drop in between 2 and 5 p.m., Robinwood Studio, 914 Highland Ave., for fireside crafts, art, aromatherapy, free tea samples and more. Information: 812-988-7094.
  • Warm Up with Whiskey cocktail classes: 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., $25, Out of the Ordinary restaurant, 61 S. Van Buren St., appetizers included. Pre-registration preferred: winterinthewoods.com.
  • Swing dance lessons: 5:30 p.m., Out of the Ordinary restaurant, 61 S. Van Buren St., free. Around 6:30 p.m., the floor will open for dancing.

More information on Winter Bliss activities

The Winter Bliss wellness retreat, part of Winter in the Woods activities, starts Friday evening, Jan. 13 at the Abe Martin Lodge in Brown County State Park. All activities take place indoors and wrap up Sunday.

While there is a charge to attend the whole event, day passes are available and the Saturday evening portion is free and open to the public.

This event, for the past five years, was under the creative direction of Lee Edgren and was formerly known as Warm Up From Within.

Try tai chi program at the library

Marc Marshall will teach a free tai chi program at Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane, from 10 am. to noon Saturday, Jan. 21.

Tai chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner accompanied by deep breathing.

Zumba classes free for YMCA members

The Brown County YMCA, 105 Willow St., offers a Zumba class from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.
