Brown County Junior High

Brown County Junior High School hosted the regional competition of the Indiana Academic Spell Bowl Junior Division Nov. 1. Columbus Central Middle School, Northside Middle School, Seymour Middle School and BCJHS all competed.

The BCJHS Eagles won third place. The team will not compete in the state finals, Principal Brian Garman said.

The Spell Bowl team included Marie Fields, Tristen Shields, Samantha Smith, Kaitlyn Waltz, Wylah Brahaum, Laurel Daugherty, Courtney Hill, Calla Imming, John Oliver, Abby Omberg and Katianna Richardson.

Brown County Intermediate

The fifth- and sixth-grade Brown County Intermediate School Spell Bowl teams placed first in their division at a contest in Seymour.

Out of the whole state, the sixth-grade team placed 11th and the fifth-grade team placed 28th, Lauren Lockdall said. She and Kristen Cole are the coaches.

Team members are Zoe Cox, Kirsten Bartley, Savannah Oden, Savannah Poling, Brock Bragg, Ava Kelly, Lizzie Roush, Landon Swafford, Alyson Pennington, Audrey Harder, Isabella Phillips, Olivia Hawkins, Sarah Callahan, Livie Austin, Lexie Austin, Remy Flesher, Marqi Satter, Madalyn Purlee, Caelen Stanley, Clay Austin, Chase Austin, Garrett Braden, Ady Grider, Ali Majors, Corbin Brahaum and Ava Padgett.

Helmsburg Elementary

Helmsburg Elementary School’s Spell Bowl team won second place in their competition, Principal Kelli Bruner said.

Team members — whose last names were not shared — are Jade W., Avri V., Carley T., Ari M., Silas C., Henry F., Ada G., Maya H. and Trevor S. Sara Draper and Oliva Hobbs are the coaches.

Sprunica Elementary

The Sprunica Elementary School fourth-grade Spell Bowl team placed first in their division.

The team consisted of Anna Emkes, Ava Cox, Ava Sanders, Ben Wagler, Brycen Fitzgibbon, Emmi Cody, Jordan Flynn, Maddilyn Browning and Madilyn Hawley. Coaches are Dana Figg and Jaida Goldberg.

Van Buren Elementary

The Van Buren Elementary Spell Bowl team competed in Seymour on Nov. 17.

Team members are Sawyer Kelp, Sophie Mathis, Isabelle Crone, Morgan Irwin, Phoebe Schultz, Anthony Clemins, Addie True, Codey Burberry, Elaina White, Shauna Custard, Alayna Jacobus, Eli Wrightsman, Rebekah Meyers and Mady Hawkins.

Makenzie Duncan and Angie Shirley are the coaches.
