High school students can apply to be pages
INDIANAPOLIS — High school students across the state can participate in one of three Statehouse Page days hosted by Indiana Electric Cooperatives.
Application deadlines are a week prior to each program date. Available dates are Monday, Jan. 23; Wednesday, Feb. 1; and Monday, Feb. 13.
Each day will include a tour of the governor’s office and the Indiana Statehouse, as well as the opportunity to meet the student’s local state representative. Pages will observe floor sessions, learn about current legislation and assist staff members.

Program planned on veterans’ benefits
Brown County Veterans Service Officer Ron Higgins will speak about veterans’ benefits, health care and more at the Brown County Career Resource Center, 246 E. Main St., from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2.

SCI REMC will sponsor students for DC trip
MARTINSVILLE — Students who will be seniors in 2017 can apply for the annual Indiana Youth Tour to Washington, D.C., June 8 to 15.
South Central Indiana REMC will sponsor up to two students. Qualifying students are those who live in an SCI-REMC member household.
Students will visit the Gettysburg battlefield, Arlington National Cemetery and the Smithsonian museums; tour the Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King Jr., and Franklin D. Roosevelt memorials; and take a night cruise on the Potomac River.
Students will also participate in a youth rally hosted by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, during which they can share thoughts and opinions on a variety of timely issues. The rally will prepare students for a day on Capitol Hill, where they will be able to meet with Indiana’s congressional delegation.

Nursing assistant classes planned
Certified nursing assistant classes are offered periodically at the Brown County Career Resource Center depending on interest. The next class is tentatively scheduled to begin in March. Call the CRC at 812-988-5880 for more information or to register.
SCI REMC hosts student art contest
All Indiana students in kindergarten through 12th grade can enter the Cooperative Calendar of Student Art Contest, hosted by South Central Indiana REMC. Entries are due by Friday, March 24.
A first-place artist in each grade will receive $200. The artwork of each grade-level winner will illustrate the cover and the 12 months of the calendar. One Artist of the Year will be selected for Best of Show and receive an additional $100. Up to nine additional artists will earn honorable mention awards and receive $50. Honorable mention awards will appear in a special section of the calendar.
Artwork will be judged on artistic merit, originality, creativity and its suitability for a wall calendar.

Computer support training certificate offered

Small-business counseling available for free
The Brown County Career Resource Center, 246 E. Main St., offers individual small-business counseling sessions through the Service Corps of Retired Executives.
There is no charge for the sessions, which meet in the morning on the first Thursday of every month. An appointment is required.

High school equivalency class times set each week
Classes focused on the high school equivalency assessment exam — formerly called GED classes — are taught year-round from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday at the Brown County Career Resource Center, 246 E. Main St.
Students who cannot attend then can arrange instruction by appointment or by distance learning.
People enrolled in adult education may be eligible for free job training through Work One.

Volunteer reading tutors sought in schools
The Brown County Literacy Coalition is seeking volunteer tutors to read with elementary school children in the first through third grades. Tutors meet with their student at one of the elementary schools after school from about 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
