Community foundation earns national accreditation
The Brown County Community Foundation has achieved accreditation from the National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations.
Accreditation is a rigorous, peer-driven, voluntary and self-regulatory process, following standards for operational and legal soundness.
“Donors can be confident that the BCCF’s policy and procedures as well as all grant making are conducted ethically, transparently and effectively to provide maximum positive impact for all of Brown County,” said BCCF CEO Larry Pejeau.

Centerstone receives grant from Duke Energy
BLOOMINGTON — Centerstone has been granted $4,900 from the Duke Energy Foundation to support its Child and Family Services programming. The gift, in addition to $1,400 given previously, will help pay for nine mobile play therapy kits to be used in Brown, Lawrence and Monroe counties.
The kits contain therapeutic books, games, toys, art materials and sensory items, allowing children to express language and process trauma and emotions. Centerstone aims to build 100 mobile play therapy kits to be used over its 17-county service area in Indiana.
“Research shows again and again how beneficial play is in helping children heal from effects of trauma, which impacts the majority of the children and families we serve,” said Amanda Pardue, regional director of Child and Family Services. “These play therapy kits will give our therapists the tools necessary to help them deliver care that will change our youngest community members’ and their families’ lives.”
Lions Club offering grants, scholarships
The Brown County Lions Club will award up to five scholarships for Brown County High School seniors.
The club also will provide money for projects proposed by local nonprofits.
Grants are made possible through the support of Lions’ fundraising projects. One such project is Double Value Coupon Cards, which are now being sold for 2017.
Grant allocations will be finalized early in March, so applications should be made as soon as possible. Application forms must be postmarked by Tuesday, Jan. 31.

Ministry provides cancer support program
GNAW BONE — Nondenominational group Heart of Christ Ministries, 5181 State Road 46 East, offers a program called Thriving Hope Cancer Care Ministry.
Sponsored by Our Journey of Hope from the cancer treatment centers of America, the ministry provides people touched by cancer with help and spiritual counsel specific to the needs of cancer patients, caregivers or loved ones. Leaders completed a Bible-based cancer care training program.

Free child seat inspections in Bloomington
BLOOMINGTON — Riley Physicians, a partner with IU Health Southern Indiana Physicians, is providing free child safety seat checks at the Bloomington Township Fire Department, 5081 North Old State Road 37.
There is no one certified in Brown County to do child seat checks, according to IU Health.

Vaccines for uninsured available at health department
The Brown County Health Department, on the second floor of the County Office Building, 201 Locust Lane, is offering all immunizations free of charge for uninsured adults.
Vaccines include tetanus, hepatitis A and B, dTap, MMR, PVC13, PPSV23, varicella and others.
