A Brown County man faces two battery charges after police responded to an altercation Jan. 26.

When Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Shrader arrived at a home in the 5900 block of State Road 46 West he reported seeing a man and woman with facial injuries who were bleeding, standing in the driveway, a probable cause affidavit states.

Robert Gilman, 30, also was standing nearby and he told Shrader he had been in an argument with the woman and was trying to leave when he shoved her out of his way, the affidavit states.

The man came outside to defend the woman and Gilman began punching him. The man told Shrader he remembered falling to the ground and being kicked in the face.

Gilman told Shrader he felt he had to “defend himself,” according to the affidavit.

Gilman was placed under arrest for an outstanding warrant and transported to the Brown County jail.

Shrader then went to speak with the victims and reported the man had been beat up “pretty bad.” Shrader reported the man had a large bump above his left eye, a “severe” laceration on the inside of his upper lip, that his teeth appeared to be loose and his mouth was “pouring” blood, the affidavit states.

The man told Shrader he felt like he was going to pass out and that he was “seeing stars.” The woman had blood coming from her nose and she told Shrader she believed her nose was broken.

The woman told Shrader she was trying to stop Gilman from leaving in a van when he grabbed her and threw her in the yard. She showed Shrader mud on her pants and said Gilman hit her several times in the face, according to the affidavit.

Shrader listened to Gilman’s jail phone conversations with the woman in which he admitted to and apologized for shoving her. He also admitted to hitting the man and having tooth marks on his knee from the man’s teeth, the report stated.

Gilman was officially charged Jan. 27 with domestic battery and battery resulting in bodily injury, both Class A misdemeanors.
