Woman arrested for leaving crashed car

STORY — Police said a drunken woman crashed her car near the Horseman’s Camp, left it and got a ride to Bloomington where police later found her.

Indiana State Police Trooper Chris Griggs responded to a one-vehicle accident on State Road 135 South at Horseman Camp Road Jan. 20. He said the vehicle had run off the road twice, through a ditch and a cable fence barrier before hitting a tree. The driver was not located.

The vehicle was registered to Melissa A. Cordon, 48, and a purse inside the vehicle had her driver’s license in it, the report said.

When another trooper arrived at Cordon’s address, a Monroe County sheriff’s deputy was already there because dispatch received a 911 call from an intoxicated woman asking about a ride for her child, the report said. The dispatcher had sent the deputy to the address to do a welfare check.

The trooper said that Cordon was “extremely intoxicated” and had urinated on herself. He said he heard her say she crashed her vehicle.

Cordon was taken to the Brown County Sheriff’s Department for an interview. She told Griggs that she had been in Brown County with a man and that they drank alcohol at a local hotel before driving to Story where they continued to drink, the report said. Cordon told Griggs she didn’t remember the accident other than following the man back to her house.

A chemical test showed her blood-alcohol content to be 0.208, more than twice the legal limit for a driver.

She was charged with two counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident, all misdemeanors.
