Hydroponic berry farm seeking zoning approval

A hydroponic strawberry farm could open in the Fruitdale area if the owners get rezoning approval.

The owners of Hydro Harvest LLC were scheduled to go before the Brown County Area Plan Commission Tuesday night, Feb. 28, to ask for rezoning for about 4.75 acres. They need zoning of R2, secondary residential, and a special exception to operate a commercial greenhouse, according to the county’s zoning ordinance.

The property at 6092 State Road 135 North is now R1 and contains a “dilapidated home” and shed, according to the zoning inspector’s report.

The couple want to build two greenhouses and grow produce, primarily strawberries, to sell at a roadside stand, the company’s request reads.

Hydroponic farms grow plants without using soil, with water delivering the nutrients instead.

Hydro Harvest LLC plans to make this a “pick and eat” berry farm and may offer farm tours as well, the request reads.

The request was scheduled to be heard at 6 p.m. at the County Office Building.
