Choir students performing in concert this week

Choir students from the intermediate, junior high and high schools will perform this week to celebrate Music in our Schools month.

The concert will start at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 9 in the Brown County High School auditorium. It will feature performances from all of Brown County Schools’ choral programs: BCIS Choir, BCJHS seventh- and eighth-grade choirs, and BCHS Combined Choirs and Rhapsody Show Choir.

The National Association for Music Education (NAfME) celebrates Music in our Schools month every March in an effort to engage music educators, students, families and community members in the “high-quality music programming that is happening in our own public schools,” said Kristi Billings, director of vocal music at the high school.

A freewill donation will be collected to benefit the district’s choral programs.

Art guild to focus on pastels in March

The Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St., is exhibiting “Unexpected Light: The History & Importance of Pastels” through March.

It includes works by Donna Shortt, Pam Newell, Corrine Hull, Mary Ann Davis, Carol Strock Wasson, Chris Griffin Woods, Gerrie Govert, Ron Burgess, Robert Hoffman and Charlene George, plus never-before-seen pastel works by early Brown County artists Carl Graf, V.J. Cariani and Marie Goth.

Free demonstrations and lectures are also scheduled at the Guild as follows:

• Saturday, March 11 — 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., pastel demonstration and discussion about history of pastels with Newell; presentation of historical pastels by founding members of the guild not previously exhibited.

• Saturday, March 18 — 2 to 3:30 p.m., brief lecture and demonstration on pastels by Wasson.

• Saturday, March 25 — 1 to 4 p.m., pastel demonstration and collaboration by Shortt and Hull.

Concert, auction to benefit teen center

A silent auction and concert are taking place this month to benefit the BETA Teen Center.

Silent auction items can be seen and bid on now at 32auctions.com/betateen. They include tickets to wide-ranging venues, paintings, jewelry, photography and other items made and donated by professional artists.

The auction will close the evening of the Youth Music Showcase Saturday, March 11. Led by local musicians Kara Barnard and Cari Ray, the concert will include more than 15 local students on stage at the Brown County Playhouse, 70 S. Van Buren St.

Before the concert, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., an open house will take place at the new teen center, 45 S. Jefferson St., above Fallen Leaf Books.

Weaving workshops offered at Artists Colony

The Artists Colony Inn, 105 S. Van Buren St., will offer weaving workshops from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, March 12 and Saturday, April 29.

The workshop includes a tapestry weaving loom and tools, a variety of yarn textures and colors, a printed weaving guide and a meal voucher for lunch or dinner the day of the workshop.

Nominations accepted for state art awards

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Arts Commission is accepting nominations for the 2017 Governor’s Arts Awards until 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 15. Awards recognize excellence in artistic achievement, philanthropy, arts education and leadership in the arts.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with Celtic concert

From 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 17, Celtica, a progressive Celtic band, will perform at the Brown County Inn, 51 State Road 46 East, in the Town Hall banquet room. The band includes Tammera Lane and guitarist Tim Dooley.

This event also serves as the band’s CD release party.

Lane sings and plays keyboard, hammered dulcimer, field organ, hurdy gurdy, bowed psaltery and harp. She is backed by Dooley on guitar, Irish bouzouki, bodhran drum and mandolin.

Others in the lineup include guitarist Jeff Foster, fiddler Carolyn Dutton, hurdy gurdy and percussionist Tom Lozano and bagpipe/pennywhistle player Clancy Clements.

Learn origami at library during spring break

Adults, teens and children ages 5 to 12 can learn origami, the art of paper folding, from Donna Marks during spring break.

The free program will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 22 at the Brown County Public Library, 205 N. Locust Lane. All materials will be provided. It’s limited to 15 participants.

Spring break, summer arts camps offered

Registration is open for a Spring Break Arts Camp and youth summer camps offered through Ivy Tech’s Center for Lifelong Learning in Bloomington.

A variety of summer camps are available with morning and afternoon options for ages 4 to 18. Programming runs from March 13 through July.

One camp is taking place at Brown County Intermediate School. Nathan Dillon will lead a music session, Everybody Rocks, for ages 8 to 11, Tuesdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. March 28 to May 2. Students will work together to make music with guitars, drums, keyboards, basses and singers. The session’s end is celebrated with a concert to demonstrate improved instrument and team skills. Owning an instrument is helpful but not required. Registration is due by Tuesday, March 21.

Other summer camp offerings in various locations include architectural design, paint, pencil, ceramics, cooking and baking, computer animation, audio editing, drawing and painting, guitar building, theater, rocket launching and more.

SCI REMC hosts student art contest

All Indiana students in kindergarten through 12th grade can enter the Cooperative Calendar of Student Art Contest, hosted by South Central Indiana REMC. Entries are due by Friday, March 24.

A first-place artist in each grade will receive $200. The artwork of each grade-level winner will illustrate the cover and the 12 months of the calendar. One Artist of the Year will be selected for Best of Show and receive an additional $100. Up to nine additional artists will earn honorable mention awards and receive $50. Honorable mention awards will appear in a special section of the calendar.

Artwork will be judged on artistic merit, originality, creativity and its suitability for a wall calendar.

‘Women of Steele’ exhibit opening in March

BELMONT — A portrait display of significant women in T.C. Steele‘s life, “Women of Steele,” will open during a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 26, in the large studio at T.C. Steele State Historic Site, 4220 T.C. Steele Road.

Portraits of the painter’s mother, his daughter and his two wives will be on display until June.

The opening and reception are free with the standard admission price as part of the Sunday at Home series.

Outdoor painting demonstrations planned in spring

Patricia Rhoden Bartels will provide painting demonstrations as follows:

• Friday, April 21 — 9 a.m. to noon at Hesitation Point on west gate road in Brown County State Park, to catch the fog from the morning vista.

• Saturday, April 22 — 1 to 4 p.m. at T.C. Steele State Historic Site.

• Saturday, April 29 (during Wildflower Foray) — 5 to 8 p.m. at the west-facing vista, auto tour station No. 3 in Brown County State Park, to paint the sunset.

• Saturday, April 30 (during Wildflower Foray) — 1 to 4 p.m. in the wildflower garden at T.C. Steele State Historic Site.

• Sunday, May 7 — 1 to 4 p.m. at Kelp playground, Brown County State Park, to paint the creek.

• Sunday, May 14 — 1 to 4 p.m. at Hohen Point vista in Brown County State Park, to paint the panorama.

On April 30, May 7 and 14, up 12 youth ages 5 to 15 can paint along with Bartels, who is a former junior high art teacher. Basic materials will be provided.

Artists can apply to be on studio tours

Applications are being accepted for the 19th annual Back Roads of Brown County studio tour. A juried event, the October tour is founded and produced by local artists.

Studio, display space available in gallery

B3 Gallery, in a new location at 61 W. Main St., is seeking additional Hoosier artwork to display.

All varieties of 3-D work are sought, as well as 2-D space for artists not currently affiliated with a local gallery.

Studio space also is available for artists who need a dedicated space to work, to give demonstrations or classes and to display their work.

Back Roads of Brown County tours scheduled

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily during October, 24 artists will open their studios to the public in 15 locations around Brown County.

Visitors can meet artists, watch them work, explore their studios and buy a variety of handmade work directly from artists.
