‘World-class’ Indiana art up for auction this weekend

Fans of vintage and contemporary Indiana art will have many pieces to look at and several opportunities to take them home during the Taste of Art benefit this weekend.

The second annual art auction and wine tasting, sponsored by the Brown County Rotary Club, will start at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at the Seasons Lodge Conference Center. The auction will begin at 7 p.m.

Auction items include an oil painting by impressionist Frederick Rigley; a watercolor by C. Carey Cloud; art from Otto Stark, William Forsyth, Sue McCallister, Kay Pool and Martha Calloway; work by contemporary artists Patricia Rhoden Bartels, Fred Doloresco and Anabel Hopkins; a wall hanging by fabric artist Daren Redman; clay pieces by Larry Pejeau and more. Some items will be in a silent auction.

Rotary Club President Larry Hanson said the artwork is “world-class” this year, thanks to the work of Mike Laros, Ken Harker and Jay Carter.

The first Taste of Art last year netted around $6,000, making it the largest fundraiser ever for the Brown County Rotary Club, Hanson said.

The auctioneer will be Michael Verloop, auctioneer and appraiser with Christy’s Auctions of Indiana.

Four local wineries will present wines for tasting and purchase. Wine tasting with hors d’oeuvres will be followed by the auction at 7 p.m. Tickets entitle each person to six free tastings per winery.

Tickets are $35 per person or $60 per couple. They can be bought at the Brown County Art Guild, the Brown County Democrat, The Seasons, local wineries, the Brown County Visitors Center or from any Rotary member.

Proceeds will benefit charities supported by the local Rotary Club. These include Mother’s Cupboard community kitchen; support and recognition for local students through scholarships; a foreign exchange program; students of the month; teachers of the year; a Rotary Interact Club at Brown County High School; distribution of “I Like Me” books for kindergartners; community projects such as rebuilding the town well house and more.
