Pastels exhibit extended through April

Due to the popularity of the exhibit, “Unexpected Light: The History & Importance of Pastels” will remain on display through the month of April at the Brown County Art Guild.

The exhibit is free and includes work by guild artists, Mary Ann Davis, Charlene George, Gerrie Govert, Robert Hoffman, Corrine Hull, Pam Newell, Donna Shortt, Carol Strock Wasson and Chris Griffin Woods.

The art guild, at 48 S. Van Buren St., is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday; and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

State’s Hoosier Women Artist contest open

INDIANAPOLIS — Selected artwork by selected Hoosier women artists will hang in Indiana Statehouse offices for a year.

Artists can apply for the 2017 Hoosier Women Artist Contest through the Indiana Arts Commission until 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 19. The website is in.gov/lg/2528.htm.

The competition was established in 2008 as a way to celebrate the arts in Indiana communities and showcase work of talented female artists throughout the state.

Weave-in, Spin-in planned monthly at library

Weavers and spinners of all skill levels can bring looms, spindles and wheels to the Brown County Public Library from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, April 15 and May 20.

Weaving and spinning experts and beginners are welcome to ask questions and to share projects and ideas at the free event.

Spring art activities planned at park, historic site

Brown County State Park and T.C. Steele State Historic Site have several spring programs planned with art and music. They include:

• Friday, April 21 — 9 a.m. to noon at Hesitation Point on west gate road in Brown County State Park, Patricia Rhoden Bartels will provide a painting demonstration to catch the morning fog from the vista; gate fee applies.

• Saturday, April 22 — 1 to 3 p.m. at T.C. Steele State Historic Site, Earth Day weekend painting demonstration with Bartels, free with admission to the site.

• Sunday, April 23 — 2 to 3:30 p.m. at T.C. Steele site, Sunday at Home; matinee music in the studio with Amanda Webb, Carolyn Dutton and James LaVelle, free with standard admission.

• Saturday, April 29 (during Wildflower Foray) — 4 to 8 p.m. at the west-facing vista, auto tour station No. 3 (south of Hohen Point) in Brown County State Park, Bartels will paint the sunset; gate fee applies.

• Saturday, April 30 (during Wildflower Foray) — 1 to 4 p.m., Bartels will paint in the historic gardens at T.C. Steele State Historic Site, free with admission to the site.

• Sunday, May 7 — 1 to 4 p.m. at Kelp playground, Brown County State Park, Bartels will paint the creek; gate fee applies.

• Saturday, May 13 — 1 to 4 p.m. at the T.C. Steele site, Betty Wagoner will conduct a watercolor workshop painting historic buildings; registration required, limit of 14, free with standard admission.

• Sunday, May 14 — 1 to 4 p.m. at Hohen Point vista in Brown County State Park, Bartels will paint the panorama; gate fee applies.

On April 30, May 7 and 14, up to 12 youth ages 5 to 16 can paint along with Bartels, who is a former junior high art teacher. Basic materials will be provided.

• Saturday, May 20 — 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at T.C. Steele site, the Festival of Flowers Paint-out will include a dedication ceremony in the formal garden for the historic marker at 2 p.m.

Student art competition begins April 22

The Mabel B. Annis Student Art Competition will hang Saturday, April 22 through Sunday, May 7 at the Brown County Art Galley, 1 Artist Drive.

All students in the seventh through 12th grades from Bartholomew, Brown, Greene, Jackson, Johnson, Morgan and Monroe county schools are eligible to participate. Home-schooled students can enter if under the guidance of a licensed art teacher.

The competition includes six categories: painting, drawing, 3-D, print, photography and video.

More than $1,500 in prize money will be awarded. Indiana Heritage Arts will present a $150 IHA Teacher of the Year award in the junior high and senior high divisions.

Gallery features artists in April

Visit the Hoosier Artist Gallery, 45 S. Jefferson St., between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily in April to view the work of wood turner Max Monts and painter, Cheryl Duckworth. The gallery is closed on Easter.

Monts, a retired schoolteacher, has worked with wood most of his life. Duckworth works in oil and acrylics. She describes her paintings as “whimsical realism” inspired by nature.

Artists can apply to be on studio tours

Applications are being accepted for the 19th annual Back Roads of Brown County studio tour. A juried event, the October tour is founded and produced by local artists.

Next pARTake workshop focuses on abstract

PARTake art workshops will return starting Saturday, April 22.

Using palette knives, acrylics, modeling paste, sponges and dripping techniques, participants can create a unique landscape or abstract painting under the guidance of Anabel Hopkins. From 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 22, the workshop will take place in the Howard Hughes Room of the Brown County Community Foundation, 209 N. Van Buren St.

The workshop costs $40, or or $35 for Art Alliance members.

Make jewelry at state park Nature Center

From April to July, artist in residence Amy Greely will lead jewelry-making workshops from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. one Saturday per month at Brown County State Park’s Nature Center.

Part of an Arts in the Parks grant, the workshops include a 10 a.m. hike to explore the understory of the forest floor to provide inspiration. Workshop dates are April 29, May 6, June 24 and July 15.

Weaving workshop offered at Artists Colony

The Artists Colony Inn, 105 S. Van Buren St., will offer a weaving workshop from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 29.

The workshop includes a tapestry weaving loom and tools, a variety of yarn textures and colors, a printed weaving guide and a meal voucher for lunch or dinner the day of the workshop.

Plein air exhibit includes local artists

BLOOMINGTON — The Upland Plein Air Painters will display works from more than 30 artists at the Farmer House Museum, 529 N. College Ave., from Thursday, April 6 through May 2. It will include works of Brown County artists Donna Whitsitt and Eric Brock.

A reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 7, will coincide with a series of First Friday events downtown area. Artwork in oil, watercolor, pastel and various drawing media will be for sale. The exhibit will be open open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.

Indiana Heritage Arts exhibit seeks works

Indiana Heritage Arts of Nashville is seeking Hoosier artists to enter its 39th annual exhibition and sale which begins June 10.

Artists may submit up to three works in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pen and ink, chalk, and a variety of techniques. All works must be two-dimensional.

The entry deadline is May 20. Take-in day for artwork is June 4 at the Brown County Art Gallery, 1 Artist Drive.

Artists will compete for some $20,000 in prize money plus the opportunity to sell their work during the monthlong show. Admission to see the show is free. Hours are Mondays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays, noon to 5 p.m.

The public will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite painting. The People’s Choice winner receives $500.

In 2016, 76 artists were juried into the show. More than 130 works will be hung in this year’s show. Lori Putnam of Nashville, Tennessee, will be the show’s judge.

IHA promotes the tradition of plein air painting begun in the 1890s by the group called the Brown County School.

The Paint Box art gallery, 92 W. Franklin in Antique Alley, is seeking artists to display their work as panels become available.

Gallery, studio grand opening in May

Nashville artist Anabel Hopkins opened a new gallery and studio April 1 at the intersection of Honeysuckle Lane and Old Hickory Lane, in the Tuckaway Building north of Antique Alley.

Anabel Hopkins Fine Art includes contemporary abstract, traditional landscapes and a new series of southwest art from northern New Mexico.

The building also houses a studio to be shared with oil painters Ellen Cramer and Rose Bremer. Their work and that of local art quilter Daren Redman will be displayed.

A grand opening will be celebrated the weekend of May 12 to 14, from noon to 5 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Regular hours likely will be noon to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays and other days to be determined, increasing as the season progresses.

Dance workshop planned in state park

Windfall Dancers will host a multi-generational dance workshop at Brown County State Park’s Nature Center at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 13.

Part of an Arts in the Parks grant, the workshop will explore the natural beauty and individuality of the state park and incorporate those qualities into creative movement.

Festival of Flowers Paint-out planned in May

BELMONT — The 18th annual Festival of Flowers PaintOut, a plein air art competition for established and beginning adult and child artists, will take place Saturday, May 20, at T.C. Steele State Historic Site.

Artists can work from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the historic site or anywhere in Brown County. Three judges will choose winners in six categories: oil, acrylic, watercolor, drawing, mixed media/other and teen/child. First place and People’s Choice winners will display their work in a downtown Nashville gallery.

Brozinni’s Pizzeria will have lunches for sale. Parking is $3 for non-artists.

Registration is required and discounts are available to those who register during April. Regular registration rates apply in May; day-of registration is available on site. Registration materials can be downloaded from tcsteele.org/programs beginning in April.

Back Roads of Brown County tours scheduled

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily during October, 24 artists will open their studios to the public in 15 locations around Brown County.

Visitors can meet artists, watch them work, explore their studios and buy a variety of handmade work directly from artists.

B3 Gallery, in a new location at 61 W. Main St., is seeking additional Hoosier artwork to display.

All varieties of 3-D work are sought, as well as 2-D space for artists not currently affiliated with a local gallery.
