A Columbus woman has been charged with escape, a Level 5 felony, after police say she jumped out of a police vehicle while being taken to the jail from a hospital.

Brown County Jail Commaner Tony Sciscoe and jail officer Lisa Melton were on their way to the jail from Columbus Regional Hospital March 28 with Keighlin P. Jarvis, 21, when they stopped at the intersection of State Road 46 and Hawthorne Drive, according to a probable cause affidavit by Indiana State Police Trooper Chris Griggs.

Sciscoe said Jarvis was in the back seat in a protective smock and a “belly belt” with handcuffs and leg shackles. As the vehicle slowed to stop at the intersection, Jarvis jumped from the vehicle and ran north on State Road 46 up the hill to the Seasons Lodge.

Melton was able to catch Jarvis a short distance from the road, the affidavit said.

Jarvis told Griggs she was not trying to escape, but rather hoping she would get injured so she could return to the hospital and not the jail. She said she knew she would not get far, but “was crying for help,” the affidavit said.

Jarvis admitted to Griggs that she was a heroin addict and used between a gram and 2 grams of heroin a day. She told police during questioning that she wants help with her addiction.

She is currently facing multiple charges in Brown County after police reported she falsely identified herself three times to officers and brought heroin into the jail.

She was charged with escape, a Level 5 felony, on April 13.
