Letters: ‘A word of caution to the RDC/HCI team’

To the editor:

The Regional Opportunity Initiative (ROI) will be a difficult sell to the community when you consider that part of the initiative is to align Kindergarten-12 with “… regional opportunities and demands …” (Brown County Democrat, 5/17).

According to the plan of the initiative, the curriculum of our schools may change in order to develop a work force to support this large-scale economic development plan.

This sounds rather fascist, for one thing, and secondly, it undermines or defeats the purpose of emphasizing a liberal education designed to provide equal opportunities to all students.

In regard to this concern, you should consider the nature of Indiana’s instituted school voucher program, which I learned recently is the largest in the country.

This is a topic worth consideration and discussion regarding the Regional Opportunity Initiative plan.

Sincerely,

John C. Douglas, Nashville
