Summer day camp offered in town

Brown County Parks & Recreation is offering a summer day camp for kids in preschool through sixth grade from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, May 31 to Aug. 4, excluding holidays.

Registration costs $10 per family. Daily rates are $25 for the first child and $20 for each additional child. Weekly rates are $95 for the first child and $75 for each additional child.

John Hartford Memorial Festival returns this week

BEAN BLOSSOM — The “most laid back festival in America” returns for a seventh year to Bill Monroe Music Park & Campground, State Road 135 North.

The four-day, family-friendly event will feature more than 40 performers on three outdoor stages, 24-hour campground jamming, children’s activities, workshops, an all-star collaboration and fiddle and banjo contests.

The late John Hartford’s musical style paved the way for today’s updated version of bluegrass, better known as “newgrass” or Americana music.

The lineup of performers includes the Steep Canyon Rangers, Travelin’ McCourys, Jeff Austin Present, The Grateful Ball, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, Vince Herman & Friends, Pert Near Sandstone, Rumpke Mountain Boys, Run Boy Run, Molly Tuttle, Dead Winter Carpenters, Larry Keel Experience, Mountain Sprout and The Tillers and more.

The Old Time Fiddling Contest will start at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 3, with the songwriting showcase and banjo contest slated for Friday, June 2.

Learn where Lake Monroe water enters, leaves

BLOOMINGTON — Friends of Lake Monroe will host a guided tour of the Lake Monroe watershed from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 3.

The group will drive through the backwoods of Brown, Monroe and Jackson counties to find out where the lake water comes from and see where it leaves the lake.

Bring a lunch and beverage. Meet in the Kmart parking lot closest to the corner of Bloomingfoods, 3220 E. Third St.

‘American Pickers’ series to film in Indiana

“American Pickers” plans to film throughout Indiana in June and the show’s producers are looking for properties to visit.

The documentary/reality show explores the world of antique “picking.” The show follows two men who hunt for valuable antiques in private collections that may be housed in people’s barns, antique stores, businesses or homes. They look for sizeable, unique collections and learn the stories behind them.

Muddy Roots weekender planned in June

VAN BUREN TWP. — EXplore Brown County, 2620 Valley Branch Road, will host a music festival Friday and Saturday, June 2 and 3.

The fifth annual Muddy Roots spring weekender, hosted by Muddy Roots Music Recordings, is limited to 500 tickets. A mini version of the festival, the event is billed as “a family reunion or roots music company picnic.” Music will be played from noon to midnight Friday and Saturday.

The lineup includes string bands, country music, roots blues, punk blues, folk, Americana, bluegrass and more. Music, produce and more at farmers market

BEAN BLOSSOM — From 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 2, the Bean Blossom Farmers Market welcomes the singing and playing of musician Joe Persinger.

The vendor of the day is four-year market veteran Robyn Mathers with a variety of produce, baked goods and pretzel sticks.

Other vendors will sell fresh produce, crafts, desserts and hot food for dinner. There’s a place to sit, a playground and a kids’ activity table.

In the community children’s garden, Kari Smith from Three Lakes Farms will teach “All About Bees.”

The community outreach booth will allow Brown County Guardian Ad Litem members to explain how the program mentors children.

Revival planned at Morgantown church

MORGANTOWN — Everyone is welcome. at the Gospel Lighthouse, at the corner of Sycamore and Hoosier streets, for a revival beginning at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, June 4.

Helmsburg church to host hog roast, speaker

HELMSBURG — After 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning worship June 4, the Brown County Community Church, 2370 Main St., will have a hog roast. Bring a side dish. The free event will include music, fellowship and testimony by Bruce Frye.

Frye will also be a guest speaker at nightly church meetings beginning at 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, June 5 to 7.

ServSafe food manager class offered

A ServSafe food manager class will be offered in Nashville on Monday and Wednesday, June 5 and 7.

Each food establishment in the county is required to have a food manager on staff unless they are a nonprofit or serving only prepacked food. Certification is good for five years and is nationally recognized.

Classes will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 5 and 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 7.

The cost is $125 for the class, text and test. If you have the text, the cost for the class is $50.

Parkview VBS starts June 5 in evenings

Confident Kids Camp offered Tuesdays this summer

BEAN BLOSSOM — Hope for Hearts Farm, on State Road 45 west of Bean Blossom, will offer a day camp on four Tuesdays in June and July.

Children ages 8 to 12 can experience farm life, learn about horses, and participate in non-riding activities with horses. They also will participate in devotionals, games and crafts. Activities are tied into building a child’s confidence and self-esteem.

Camp dates are June 6 and 20 and July 11 and 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The camp costs $45 per day or $160 for all four days.

Blood drive planned in June

An American Red Cross blood drive will take place from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 7 at Parkview Church of the Nazarene, 1750 State Road 46 East across from the north entrance to the state park.

A blood donor card, driver’s license or two other forms of I.D. are required at check-in.

Through Sept. 4, donors can enter to win a grand prize package for four to Knott’s Berry Farm in California or Cedar Point in Ohio.

State park hosts live raptor program

Brown County State Park is hosting live bird shows with representatives from the Indiana Raptor Center through fall.

Starting at 2 p.m., Saturday shows at the Nature Center include each Saturday in June and July, and Oct. 7, 14 and 21.

Shows at Abe Martin Lodge begin at 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 3, Saturday, Sept. 2, and Friday, Nov. 24.

The presentations are included with park admission.

Practical history sessions for children planned

The Brown County Historical Society’s children’s program, Hands on History, is offered from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays, June 15, July 20, Aug. 17, Sept. 14 and Oct. 19. Programs are geared for ages 8 to 12.

Registration is required and the fee is $5 per child, per program.

Topics vary each session; they include nature study, early transportation, Native Americans of Brown County, pioneer household chores, one-room school days and harvest.

Show choir camp offered for Grades 4 to 6

Radiation awareness training set for June 26

COLUMBUS — Nonprofit agency Legal Aid provides free legal services and lawyer referrals to low-income residents of District 1, covering Brown and seven other counties in south-central Indiana.

Ten- to 15-minute consultations will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. on the fourth Monday of each month at the Legal Aid Office, United Way Building, 1531 13th St., Suite G330. Dates of the Monday clinics are  June 26, Aug. 28, Sept. 25, Oct. 23, Oct. 27 and Dec. 18 (third week due to Christmas).
